----1992----
By May 1992 I was becoming bored with the power of an 1100cc Fiesta & considered my options. An XR2 mk2 would be ideal but insurance was very expensive at that time.I considered a 1400 Sport but thought I'd never really be happy with that as it would be a poor substitute in standard form (sorry to any 1.4S owners reading this!).I also considered a Supersport but couldn't find one in the right condition & price.
Then I made a huge blunder.A couple of friends owned MG Bs & persuaded me to buy one.Unfortuanately I knew nothing about them & bought a rotten one which cost me over 1000 in new panels & welding (I couldn't weld then). It did me one favour though & taught me how to spray paint.
BBJ was sold to my next door neighbour for 1000 with 99000 miles showing,so it continued to haunt me during my MGB catastrophe. Finally in December 1992 I decided to cut my losses with the MG,borrow some money & buy the car I really wanted...a Fiesta XR2 mk2 in red.So on December 19th the MG was part exchanged for C25 BEX,which you can read about elsewhere on this site.
1999
My neighbours sold BBJ in around 1995 to a friend of theirs but it still haunted me in the local car parks, looking worse each time I saw it.Eventually in January 1999 I approached the owner & enquired about buying it.Luckily they were thinking of replacing it as the MOT was almost due & it stood little chance of passing.
In March 1999 I bought BBJ back for 125.Its final journey was 3 miles long with me behind the wheel. The odometer was showing 62000 (add 100,000).It was a far cry from that day in September 1983 when I drove it on the road on my 17th birthday.
The intention was to restore BBJ to its former glory,it even still had its original engine fitted, but once it was stripped I realised the only sensible option would be a reshell & I couldn't do that as I'd know it wasn't the car I'd known all those years.I finally decided to scrap the car,but not before I transfered the registration number.BBJ 769Y would become MY cherished number.
A scrap Fiesta shell was worth about 3 so the shell suffered the indignity of being cut into small sections & taken by me to the scrap metal skip at the local refuse site.
So what was..is..BBJ 769Y today....
...BBJ 2 was the family Montego estate which I "liked" so much I only took 1 picture of it.........
Since March 2000 BBJ 3 has been the family Astra estate. It will end up on another Fiesta..one day!
Me & the original & best BBJ 769Y in summer 1986...where did I get that shirt...& what a hair cut!
