Campaign-1000 Partners by 2003
November 1 to December 31, 2002.
Redeemer Lutheran Church and RCFL provide a
Christian witness to the residents of North Minneapolis, serving as a beacon of
hope to the Harrison Neighborhood. To
accomplish this, Redeemer offers an “umbrella” ministry addressing three
specific needs: housing, youth and children, and hunger. To ensure Redeemer can offer programs in
2003, we are seeking 1000 partners to make contributions to the general
operating budget. Watch your mailboxes
for more information and please consider becoming one of the 1000 partners by
giving a gift to Redeemer by December 31.
Last week Redeemer held a congregational
meeting and voted to change my Call from a two-term position to a permanent
Call.
The congregation also voted to extend to Jeff
Nehrbass a Call to serve as assistant pastor fifteen hours per week. Pastor Jeff and his wife Cindy own and
operate two dance studios in St Louis Park and Eden Prairie. Jeff graduated from Luther Seminary in 1995
and has been serving at Good Shepherd in Eden Prairie. This will be Jeff’s first ordained
Call.
During last week’s meeting the congregation
also voted to sell the parsonage and to use the proceeds to strengthen the
relationship between Redeemer Center for Life and Redeemer. In recent months, Redeemer Center for Life
extended its line of credit in order to purchase two homes and clear land in
the strategic interest of Redeemer and the immediate neighborhood.
Each of the above strengthens Redeemer to serve as the body of Christ. These decisions, however, are primarily external. The greater test before us is internal and demands that we deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ as the purpose for our service. In our worship at Redeemer we are bold to praise Jesus Christ as the one who calls us to gather. At the Peace Palace we are bold to provide a place for children, parents, and neighbors to experience healthy and whole community. At Milda’s Restaurant, we partner with others to keep this critical community resource in North Minneapolis where people from diverse backgrounds gather.
In the midst of the wonderful signs of God’s promise at
Redeemer, we also experience the demands of limited resources. Please remember Redeemer in your prayers and
with your financial support. We are
also seeking to identify leaders who will serve at Redeemer on church council
or the board for RCFL.

Redeemer’s youth ministry is settling into a real pattern of busyness, almost as if we must keep moving constantly to ward off the cold of the winter breaking upon us. Youth have begun to fill the front pews at worship, establishing their place at Redeemer. The language of many neighborhood youth shows their belonging: Redeemer is rarely called by its name – it is simply “the church.” Children under the ten are settled into children’s church during worship, learning excitedly about God and the family of faith. Older youth are settled into leadership roles, representing Redeemer at the AGORA ministries multi-cultural retreat, Youth Leadership banquet, and Kids’ Plus conference; as well as leading Redeemer’s All Saints’ Party and hosting a youth group from Christ the King Lutheran Church. Ask the children and youth about their experience this past month – they would love to share their excitement about the life of “the church” with you!

2003 ELCA Youth Gathering in Atlanta, Georgia, July 13-20
Five of Redeemer's youth are excitedly preparing to attend the youth conference this summer with four other urban congregations in Minneapolis and 30,000 ELCA Youth at the event. Stay tuned for opportunities to support them.
Kids Cafe has been up and running for over a month and the number of new faces at Kids Cafe increases every day. On the first day, September 30th, five children came to work on their homework, play games, and share in a meal. Four weeks after the opening, Kid’s Cafe brought 24 children on a field trip to Minnetonka Orchards. Last Thursday, Redeemer was pleased to host the Grand Opening Event. Guests came from ConAgra Foods in Omaha, Second Harvest Heartland in St. Paul, and America’s Second Harvest in Chicago. In addition, over 30 children and the Twins Mascot were at Redeemer to celebrate. An article about the event will be in the North News on October 31.
The children currently registered for the program range in age from six to fifteen, and six different schools are represented by the children of Kids Cafe. In this diversity, the educational needs of the children greatly vary. We are so pleased with the volunteers that have been coming from Calvary in Golden Valley, Mt. Olivet in South Minneapolis, and Family of Christ in Chanhassen to mentor our youth.
The Kids Cafe meals and activities take place at Redeemer, except on Thursdays, when children get the special treat of going to the Peace Palace for the afternoon. Over the past several months the Peace Palace has expanded. We have knocked out a wall and opened a second room. We are in the process of making the Peace Palace Annex internet-accessible and furnishing the space to make it more youth and adult-friendly. Stay tuned for more updates!
