System for
Evaluation of Students
The system used for the
students I currently teach is a very simple one developed by Contra Costa
County Office of Education/STAR Program coordinators. The class is based on a
four week curriculum with an open entry-open exit system. On the first day of
attendance the student is given a multiple choice test with 25 questions of
which 24 of the questions are used to measure the students understanding of
alcohol and other drug related problems. The last question #25 is a “freebee”
that is used to see what kind of attitude they’re bringing into the classroom.
On the last day of
attendance, Graduation Day, the students are given the same exact test to
measure how much they have improved. I go over the test myself before sending
them to headquarters every month to be put through a scantron. Unfortunately
this is the only measuring tool used to evaluate the students I teach. There is
so much more going on in the classroom that would indicate ones growth i.e.
staying clean and sober through the 20 days, going to there 12-step meetings,
building a sober support system, and developing healthy relationships with whom
they live with.
This is where my learning and
development as a teacher will come into action when I voice my concerns and
offer input on how to develop a more comprehensive and accurate student evaluation.

“UPGRADE INDICATOR”
This system for student
evaluation is better than the example because I have a copy of the Pre-Post
Test attached for one to see what the student is measured by. By doing so has
also helped me get a better understanding about why students need to be
evaluated and to develop and implement a test with a wider range and to test
more frequent than just the beginning and end of a course.
