Subject: WR1 Adult Learning Environments

As I read through the articles I was able to see some similarities in the two approaches. The first is how key factor # 4, from the “Seven Characteristics of Highly Effective Adult Learning Programs”, is similar to pattern two from “Patterns in Adult Learning” as far as the undertaking and self-directed learning goes but that’s about it. In my experience of teaching it does seem to be true about the “hurry up” culture mentioned in “Patterns in Adult Learning.”

Both articles address the need and importance of continuing education as being a part of growth and having the desire to advance in ones career. But they also mention that if one does not grow and learn they will remain stagnant. There is a saying I learned in my journey of life “if you don’t grow, you go!”

I can see how the article “Patterns in Adult Learning” recognizes the pattern of expecting to be delivered an education as I look back on my own educational adventure through grade school and even some community college.

I think Dorothy Billington’s article is better than Dr. Smith’s for a few reasons. One is that most of my life I was lectured to, talked down to, and even made fun of by a couple of teachers on a few occasions in Jr. High. I have learned that the best learning environment is one that has these three elements: safety, security, and structure. Similar to Billington’s of feeling safe and supported. Another is learning as much from the students as the students learn from me. Lastly the one that stood out the most is key factor #5 where it mentions “those adults who reported experiencing high levels of intellectual stimulation—to the point of feeling discomfort—grow more.” This reminds me of another saying “most people stay the same until the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change.” There has to be some discomfort for growth. It is the same as metamorphosis that butterflies endure.
