RE: 503, WA1, Wiget
The purpose of EVOC 503 WA1 was to prepare
an Individual Education Plan for one of the students in a course that I teach.
The following six criteria were specified:
1. Comply with all of the General Criteria
for Written Assignments.
2. Develop an "Individual Education
Plan" for a particular "Special Needs Student." The plan should
not be more than two pages (typewritten or word processed).
3. Indicate the name of a student, but change
the name of any real students (for this assignment) in order to protect
confidentiality and briefly describe the course in which the student is
enrolled.
4. Describe the student with respect to
gender, age and both mental and physical development (only observable
characteristics: NO SPECULATION)
5. Describe a specific problem that the
student is having (again, only observable characteristics: NO SPECULATION).
6. Describe an instructional strategy
relative to helping the student overcome the problem. Be sure to indicate how
and when evaluation will be made to determine if the strategy is working.
The following sources of information were
used relative to this assignment:
1. Wiget, David - From my own professional
experience.
2.
David Young -Multiple
subjects teaching credential Charter Oak School Dist.
I believe that the attached proposal meets
all six of above listed criteria and respectfully request full credit: one
point for meeting each of the above listed criteria.
Individual Education Plan for Joe Feelgood
(name changed to protect confidentiality)
Course Description - The STAR (Substance Abuse Treatment and Recovery) program is
a curriculum-based educational program designed to motivate substance abusers
to participate in post-release recovery activities. New skills are presented
which help individuals understand the relapse process and prepare for smooth,
drug free community transition.
Student Description - Mr. Feelgood is a male, age 38, whose native
language is English and Spanish as a second language. He has little motivation to
succeed but appears to be normally developed both physically and mentally in
all respects.
Problem Description - Mr. Feelgood consistently talks in class during
lessons to other students about how great and “cool” it is to get high and use
drugs without getting caught. He has been told that this is unacceptable
behavior and has been referred to his parole officer.
Instructional Strategy – The parole officer suggested that Mr. Feelgood
attend an additional 3 meetings a week in Narcotics Anonymous (NA). While at
these meetings ask clean and sober members the benefits of recovery and supply
the class with weekly report about the benefits of staying clean and sober. The
STAR instructor also suggested that the student make a “pros & cons” list
of using alcohol and other drugs. Once the list is completed have him read it
to the class and get feedback from his peers. The STAR supervisor suggested
that Mr. Feelgood be appointed class monitor for others’ that “romance” and
“glorify” drug use. When this behavior is detected he shall bring it to their
attention and help redirect his peers and read his “pros & cons” list, thus
encouraging them to do the same. Mr. Feelgood will be recognized and praised
for this positive behavior and will have accommodating reports sent to his
parole officer. Conversely, there will be a record kept and he will be
redirected when off tract found slipping back into old behavior.
