4.     Clearly define the basic purpose of the advisory committee relative to the course or program indicated above and include information about the major specific functions of the advisory committee.

5.     Describe the steps necessary to go about establishing an advisory committee to serve the course or program described. Include information about recruiting and retaining advisory committee members.

6.     List and briefly describe at least one good resource from which further information about advisory committees can be obtained.

The following sources of information were used relative to this assignment:

RE: Proposal for Substance Abuse Treatment and Recovery Committee

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The STAR (Substance Abuse Treatment and Recovery) program is a curriculum-based educational program designed to motivate substance abusers to participate in post-release recovery activities. New skills are presented which help individuals understand the relapse process and prepare for smooth, drug free community transition. This is a 120 hour course that meets for 6 hours, five times a week for 4 weeks. Of that time all 120 hours is spent in the classroom and 8 or more hours in 12-step meetings per week. Maximum enrollment is 20 students.

PURPOSE OF THE COMMITTEE

The committee, to be comprised of people from the local Substance Abuse Treatment and Recovery programs, will provide advice about what students in the Substance Abuse Treatment and Recovery course here at the Correctional Education, Willow Campus should learn in that course in order to prepare them for long term sobriety and entry into the community as productive members of society. Establishing and maintaining such a committee would help to insure that our Substance Abuse Treatment and Recovery course is meeting student needs. It would also provide an excellent basis for a productive school/community relationship.
