Winter Garrison

"No Snow Balls are to be thrown in the Fort by any person whatever."

-Major James Clephane, Commandant Fort Stanwix,

January 8, 1759

To stay active during the winter months we try to plan a winter garrison event. In the past we were able to attend Fort Michilimackinac’s Winter Garrison Weekend. At winter garrison events we display and discuss winter uniforms and accoutrements with the public. We discuss and demonstrate the winter activities of the troops, such as wood cutting details, tramping down snow along the ramparts, guard duty, &c. If given the opportunity we build winter camps for the public to see what detachments on scouts or hunting party used for shelter, and for our own practice. For us, we do other soldier’s activities such as snow fights, snow-shoe scouts, gambling, work on repairing our kit.

We are currently looking for a historical site in Wisconsin or northern Illinois that would allow us to spend a weekend living in their historical buildings, and interpreting a frontier garrison of the French and Indian War or Pontiac’s Rebellion. If your site is interested in providing us with this opportunity please contact Corpl. Still.
