The AK47 is a classic and is often overlooked in the airsoft world as a first choice among new airsofters, this is due to the lack of after market accessories. Although this seems to be changing because of recent additions to the airsoft market, this include R.I.S. systems, conversion kits, and others. Another reason is Tokyo Marui has released their newest version of the AK, the AK Beta Spetnaz. But as for the original AK it remains a somewhat avoided AEG. I myself also overlooked it until I was looking for a good, solid, reliable AEG.
I bought it from WGC with a pre installed DTP (Den Trinity Product) Metal Receiver, now this gun is ultra solid. There is no flex what so ever, i don't know if the original plastic body had flex (although what i've heard is it is very solid, not as solid as metal but well go figure.) Both the plastic and the metal bodied AK's on Red Cell are very hefty, the plastic version is somewhat loose and has flex, although it has been left outside and it is somewhat old - a new receiver is probably the problem fixer. This is a review on the fully stock but with metal body AK... The grips as well as the stock look like wood but are actually plastic with a realistic grain to them, as we compared our two models, our band new one (metal body) had a lighter coloration to it than the older (plastic body) model, this maybe because the AK was reporduced sometime and Marui switched plastic materials or something, but this is not too much of a distraction.
Power was acceptable at 277 fps. that is enough to dent a coke can but not puncture it. The rate of fire is supplied by a EG700 motor, the way it switches from different firing modes is a big lever on the right side of the gun, it is different at first, I am used to shooting western style guns (switch on the left) and it took sometime to get used to it, but it wasn't that bad. The firing mode positions are also reversed Western Style is: Safe, Semi, Full. while the AK's Russian Style is: Safe, Full, Semi. This took some getting used to, because i usually shoot semi. The magazine capacity of the standard magazine is 70 rounds, but if that's not enough for you a Hi-Capacity magazine is available - 600 rounds, the most of all Marui Hi-Caps.
dissasembly some people may
call this... Metal silver pipe is where the AK stick battery would go on
an AK47S.
Hop-Up is adjusted by sliding the cocking handle back all the way, then you will be able to see a slide lever to adjust the hop-up more or less (forward - less, backward - more) This Hop-Up system is the more reliable than previous versions that use a wheel, the lever tends to slip less than wheel versions, so you don't have to adjust it too often.
As far as accuracy is concerned it is pretty accurate although this could be improved by simple upgrades, a TN inner barrel, power upgrade, etc. I was able to hit a 12" aluminum pan from 90 ft. or so. The nice *pang* was rewarding, but when i took it to the field although shooting at 277 fps. wind played a major part in accuracy problems, you need to switch to full auto from time to time. But it is accurate enough for a stock gun.
What i suggest is that a sling is purchased to help carry it around because you will get tired of carrying it around all day, especially if it has a metal body. More magazines are also recommended because the rate of fire on it is awesome, it just sends out a white plastic hose of BBs. It has a nice semi auto feature too, nice and smooth. I personally like this AEG, and although it doesn't have nearly as much parts as say an M4 or MP5 but for experienced players and those who like the vietnam era or just plain like the drop dead styles of the the Classic Russian assault rifle, a true classic and a must have.
... oh, this gun is great for wood land warfare and is a decent rifle for indoors, a little big around the corners but, its better to have a AK than a full blown M16.
