| Lifeblood of a brass band Competing against other bands is a traditional activity of the brass band movement and goes back to the earliest days of the brass band. To test the bands at a contest event, a 'Test Piece' is chosen, often composed specifically for the contest with the aim of producing a challenging piece of music to test the skill and musicianship of the players and conductor. During the contest each band performes the piece before one or more adjudicators whose job is to determine the best performance of the day. Test Pieces have enriched to a high degree the catalogue of music available for brass bands and are often re-used in concerts and again at contests in subsequent years. Another form of contest is the 'Entertainment Contest' where bands play a 25 minute programme of music which gives an opportunity for each band to display its strengths and versatility. These contests are always popular with audiences and often contain a degree of humour and originality. |
