To My Child On Your Graduation
Congratulations!!!!
From this day forth
you are a whole person.
Complete within yourself
Bright and strong,
Just like you've always
longed to be!
But, forgive me my child,
I must confess,
This is not easy for me.
It seems the years have been
far too few, since first
I nestled your infant form
warm against my chest.
And rocked away your tears.
I taught you how to tie your shoes
To read and say your prayers.
There's an endless list I'd like to teach,
But then, I've never
learned it all myself.
And I've survived, so you shall too.
Though I was never the perfect parent,
Nor you the perfect child,
We always loved each other
even when the love was tough
or hard to understand.
And I shall love you still
with a love that is so boundless,
I would die for you.
Even so, I cannot live for you.
For I know that if you are
to become, All that God has
planned for you to be,
You need some space to spread you wings
And fly away from me.
So on this, your Graduation Day,
I give the gift you've wanted most,
~~But the hardest one for me.~~
My precious child, with tears
upon my cheeks
~~This day~~
~~I set you free~~
