The Journey to America There was a mass migration of German-Romanian people going to North Dakota at the turn of the 19th century. The North Dakota State University has a web site at www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/grhc/index.html that has much information about this migration. There are some photos on that web site of the Mehrer family. Look under "History and Culture" and then "photographs". It is the personal photo album of ancestors of Vi (Kruckenberg) Schielke. I have listed below my great+ grandparents that made the journey from Romania to North Dakota. Christine Ann Klukes Bohnet, 1902 Christine Bohnet (my 3great grandmother) came to America on the ship Moltke with three of her children. This was the maiden voyage for the Moltke. There are two ship manifests for this journey. One is in Germany and is from the port of Hamburg, Germany where the ship set sail on 9 March 1902. Christine Bohnet, age 56, is on line one. Her daughter Christine, age 20, is on line 2. Her sons Henry, age 20, is on line 3 and Fred, age 17, is on line 4. On this manifest, it states the port of arrival as Boulogne-Sur-Mer; Southampton; New York. There residence is Koselak. Ship is Moltke; type: Dampfsciff; Accomidation: Zwischendeck; Shipline: Hamburg-Amerika Linie. I don't read Germany so I am not sure of what any of these words mean. The second ship manifest is from when they arrived in New York on 20 March 1902. I am not sure that they came through Ellis Island but it is the most probable place. I could not find them listed on the Ellis Island website. These manifests came from Ancestry.com. This manifest looks the same as the one seen below that the Mehrer and Klain family's names are on that I know was from Ellis Island. The only port name given is New York, New York. Christine Bohnet's husband Jacob had died in Romania in 1896, thus he is not on this ship with her. In my research on her, I have that she had 11 children. Christine, Henry, and Fred where her 6th, 8th, and 9th children, respectfully, and on the ship with her. I am not sure what ever became of Kathrina #7, Caroline #10, and Johannes #11. Her 3 older daughters Rosina #1, Jacobina #2 (my 2great grandmother), and Sarah #5 all came to America. Child #3, Maria, I am not sure what became of her. Child #4, Bernhard, died as an infant in South Russia. All the family that did make it to America settled in North Dakota, mostly around McLean County. Maria Unknown Klain, 1906 Maria Klain (my 3great grandmother) came to America on 26 April 1906 on the ship Grosser Kurfurst. The port of departure was Bremen, Germany. She was traveling with two of her grandchildren Maria Klain, age 8, and Johann Klain, age 6. Their parents had died in Romania within days of each other from a sickness that was going around. Maria took the children to North Dakota with her and raised them. Also traveling with her was her daughter Augusta Mehrer. She was married to Johann Mehrer who is the brother of Jacob Mehrer, my 2great grandfather. They had their five children with them. Once again, I am not positive that they came through Ellis Island but that is the most probable place. This ship manifest looks like the one I know is from Ellis Island and the port of arrival is listed as New York, New York. Jacob Mehrer and Ludwig Klain Families, 1907 Five members of the Mehrer family and twelve members of the Klain family came to America on the ship Cambroman. That ship left Antwerp, Belgium 9 November 1907 and arrived at Ellis Island, New York 24 November 1907. Their destination was North Dakota. They had been living in Romania prior to going to Antwerp to get on a boat. On the Ellis Island website, a copy of a manifest of alien passengers for the ship Cambroman can be seen. My relatives on that list are as follows:
To find this document on the Ellis Island web site, search for Jacob Mehrer as "Fred Melmer" or Ludwig Klain as "Ludwig Klein". Either search will take you to the same page. The document can also be found on Ancestry.com I am not sure who the people on lines 6-10 are. Maybe they were people traveling with the Mehrer and Klain families or they just hopped in line between the two families. |
