Munro
Family Origins
On My
Family Tree, it can be seen that this Monroe line goes back
33
generations to Donald Munro born before 990. Donald
Munro became the owner of Castle Foulis, near Evanton, 15 miles northwest of Inverness
about 1033. His father is thought to be Ocaan. The descending line of the heads of the family can be traced
all the way to present day. They were Barons and Baronets. Castle Foulis
is still standing today. My line of Munros splits from Castle Foulis in
the 1500s. George Munro, the youngest son of Robert Munro 14th Baron of
Foulis, becomes 1st of Katewell.

Mackenzie
Family Origins
On My
Family Tree,
Kenneth Mackenzie is the farthest back Mackenzie from me at generation
25. In the book The Mackenzies of Ballone
there are 16 more generations back from Kenneth. This is the list
from the book, all fathers and sons. Feracach - Oirbeirtaigh - Cormac - Ferchar - Loirn - Eirc - Gilleoin-na-h'Airde - (this starts the Mackenzie
name; there was another son who took a different name) Cristin - Kenneth - Murdoch - Duncan - Murdoch - Gilleoin Mor - Gilleoin Og - Kenneth - Angus Crom - Kenneth (who became the first Cheif of Kintail)
Research
Note
After reading the book The Mackenzies of Ballone,
it has become more apparent that I need to do more research to
connect with some other "big names" in Scottish history. These
kinds of Clan history books really don't follow the female lineages.
They may or may not give a mother's name and who her parents are.
The
way I connected the Mackenzies to the Munros was that in the books of
the Munros there was listed Catherine Mackenzie married to Hector Munro.
So I just started looking at Mackenzie books to find a Catherine married
to Hector and it paid off. Both the Mackenzie books I have listed below
have this information.
Other
Clans to look into include: Fraser, MacLeod, Macaulay, de Strathbogie,
Stewart, and Macdougall. The Stewart line of course would be the big
one. Donald Stewart Earl of Mar, father of Martha who married Murdoch
Mackenzie, is the nephew of King Robert the Bruce. At present I don't
know who King Robert the Bruce's father is.
Connecting
the Mackenzie and Munro Families
Down through the years we come to Sir Kenneth Mackenzie of Kintail, who
became heir to his father's, Andrew, estate in 1488. Kenneth was know as Kenneth-a-bhlair (of the battle).
He died 7 Feb 1492 and his tomb in Beauly Priory bears the inscription
"Hic jacet Kenitus Mckinyth dns de Kintail q. obiit VII die Februarii, A.D.
MCCCCLXXXXI." This is believed to be according to the church
calendar with his real death date of 1492 not 1491.
Kenneth Mackenzie of Kintail married Agnes Fraser,
daughter of Hugh, Lord Fraser of Lovat. Kenneth and Agnes had several
children including a daughter Catherine Mackenzie who married Hector
Munro 13th Baron of Foulis. Thus the Mackenzie and Munro lines had
joined.

Where
my Munro line starts in America
George Munro 1st of Katewell, was a younger son of the 14th Baron of
Foulis. He was killed at the battle of Pinkie in 1547, leaving, by his wife
Catherine Mackenzie, a son David. David Munro
married his kinswoman Agnes
Munro (I need to find her parents). Their son Andrew Munro is the link between the Scotch and American Families.
Andrew
served in the army of Charles 1 under the command of Sir George Munro, who fought in Ireland in the 1641 rebellion, and became Governor of Coleraine. At the call of the King, Sir George Monro, accompanied by Major Andrew Munro, fought in 1648 at the battle of
Preston This is when Major Andrew Munro was taken prisoner and banished to
Virginia. Lands designated "Headrights" were granted to him in 1650 in this State, where he married, settled down and became father of a family.
(Foulis Castle and The Monroes of Lower Inveagh pg 71)
Andrew Munro died in 1668 in Westmoreland Co, VA. His eldest son
Andrew Monroe II (1664-1714) married first Eleanor Spencer; their second son
Andrew Monroe III, came of age 1718 by court order, married Christina Tyler and died
1735. Their son
George Monroe (1708-1789) married Ann Osborne. These
Monroes came from Albemarle Co, VA in the 1770s to Rutherford Co, NC.
By
mid 1790s many Monroes had moved to Kentucky. It seems due to political
differences after the Revolutionary War. And just in a couple more
generations, the Monroe family was in Jefferson County, Indiana.
The
Line to the President of the United States of America
Spence Monroe, son of Andrew Monroe III and Christina Tyler, married Elizabeth Jones; their third son
James Monroe (April 28, 1758 - July 4, 1831) was fifth President of the United States (1817-1825).
