History of My
Genealogy Research
As a child, many Saturdays were
spent with my father driving around to graveyards and old people's
houses looking for that long lost grandparent. You know, the one that
everyone knew existed but they just can't remember the name. He gathered
information on both his family and on mom's
family. My father made a family tree chart on a poster board all those
years ago. We would look at it all the time. He still has that poster
board today. And I am pleased to say I have added to the list of names
on it.
Over the years, I had been
thinking about where my family had come from. What I knew was that five generations of
Adams' were born in Kentucky, four generations of McCutchens were either
born in Kentucky or Indiana, and five generations of Bairs were born in
Indiana. I knew there had to
be other places that I could say my relatives came from. When I was around fifteen,
I asked my grandma
Bair about her parents. She told me a story about her parents coming to America from Romania.
It is a wonderful story. It was my first
connection to a foreign land.
More recently some relatives of
mine on the Bair side have been working on the Bair/Mehrer family
history. In the late summer of 2005 when I got my hands on all this
information, I started on my official journey to find my family history.
I can now say my heritage is German, Romanian, Dutch,
Prussian, Russian, French,
British, Irish,
Scottish, Welch, Polish and possibly Cherokee Indian. (Every family has
that elusive Native American relative. A DNA test will tell me one day.)
I am sure there are others yet to be found.
In my research now, I am still
looking for names but I am spending more time on finding out
about the people. What
brought them to Kentucky and Indiana? Also, what brought those first
ancestors of mine to America? What world events were these people living? What were
these people up to? And how many wars were
my grandfather's involved in?
