| The late John Denis McGarry, PhD had a distinguished and award winning career in diabetes research at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center where he held the Clifton and Betsy Robinson Chair in Biomedical Research. Colleagues at the medical center established the John Denis McGarry Chair, in Diabetes and Metabolic Research in his honor after his death from cancer in January 2002. Dr. McGarry's Research in metabolic studies revoluntionized the thinking among diabetes researchers. As a result h received many awards for his accomplishments and contributions, including the LIlly Award for Outstanding Scientific Acheivement from the American Diabetes Association in 1978 and the Joslin Medal in 1987. The year prior to his death he was the recipient of the prestigious Banting Medal in 2001. |

| In 2004 the Dallas area office of the American Diabetes Association will present the second J. Denis McGarry Awards at the Red Ball Gala. The individual J. Denis McGarry Award for Community/Scientific Excellence in Diabetes will be presented to Phlip Raskin, MD of UT Southwestern Medical Center of Dallas who currently holds the Clifton and Betsy Robinson Chair for Biomedical Resesarch which was formerly held by J. Denis McGarry prior to his death in January 2002. The McGarry Communty Partner Award will be presented to Barb Chrishi as President of the North Texas Diabetes Educators Association of North Texas. The awards were presented at the 2004 Red Ball by the McGarry Family, daughter, Margaret, son, John, and wife, Angela. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
