Bio:
Dakota's story is perhaps the best
story of all. After a devistating fire at Mitch and Kathy's old
farm, Kathy and her daughter Casey were at a horse auction. They
weren't looking for a horse, just keeping some friends company.
When Casey saw Dakota, she said "Mom, that horse looks like
Teapot!" Teapot was Casey's pony who had unfortunately been lost
in the fire. Casey begged Kathy to make just ONE bid when the
auctioneer brought Dakota up to the block. The First bidder was
the meatpacker, so Kathy bid just $200, and got the horse! This
left Kathy in a little bit of a pickle, seeing as they were out of
state, with no truck and trailer and a copletely unbroke horse!
Thankfully, she was able to get Dakota back to Red Acre, where Dakota
spent about a year running around doing nothing. Mitch says
Dakota was one of the hardest horses he ever trained, Because she was
very skittish (a result of being abused by former owners) and
completely wild. After a very long time and a lot of hard
training, Dakota became a school horse for advanced riders. She
is now a school horse that even beginner riders can ride.
Although she is still skittish around her head and hind legs, we are so
proud of Dakota who has gone through a lot to be who she is today, a
gentle and kind mare that everyone loves to ride! Dakota is in
love with Rookie, and the two were married in September of '04.
You can see pictures of the wedding in the Photo Album section of our
