| With Euro 2000 looming, the Evertonians thought that Barmby could be inline for an England call-up. Walter Smith was certainly getting the best out of Barmby and he was playing well enough to get a call-up. Everton Deputy Chairman Bill Kenwright wrote a letter to the then England Manager, Kevin Keegan, inviting him to Goodison Park to have a look at Barmby. Every week at Goodison Park, or in the away sections of Stadiums up and down the country, the Everton Fans chanted, "Barmby For England!" Barmby made appearances for England against Malta and the Ukraine and the Evertonians were proud of their England man! Barmby made the England squad for Euro 2000 and he thanked Walter Smith, Bill Kenwright and the Everton Fans for their help in getting him there! After the Middlesbrough match at the end of the season, Barmby did a lap of the Goodison pitch with his Everton team mates to thank the fans for another season of great support. It was to be the last time Barmby would wear the Royal Blue Shirt. Barmby went to Holland and Belgium but only managed substitute appearances as England crashed out at the group stage. Barmby returned to Merseyside with a year left on his Everton contract. Wanting to keep hold of the England star, Everton offered Barmby a lucrative new contract. There were nasty rumours going round that Barmby wanted to leave Goodison Park. Then it was confirmed! Barmby and his advisers rejected Everton's offer of �25k a week! The Everton Fans were stunned! The were about to become enraged! On the 30th June 2000, Nick Barmby said those fatal words, "I want to play for Liverpool." The Evertonians went mad! The media gave it huge coverage. It made the front page of the Liverpool Echo. Everton Fans jammed local and national radio stations to make their feelings known. Over night, Barmby had gone from Everton hero to the most hated person on the Blue Half of Merseyside. To the Everton Fans, Barmby's actions had been like a kick in the teeth! Barmby will never be forgiven by the Everton Fans! Those same fans who got behind Barmby during his first two seasons at Goodison Park when he was crap, those same fans who chanted, "Barmby For England!" Those same fans were STABBED IN THE BACK BY NICK BARMBY! Any player who says he no longer wants to play for Everton is forever disliked by the Everton Fans. Gary Speed gets booed off the park everytime he visits Goodison! But for an Everton player to want to leave Everton and destinctly wants to move across Stanley Park is the biggest insult imaginable to an Everton Fan! Barmby seems to have a nack of upsetting supporters when he leaves clubs. The Spurs Fans, Boro Fans and now the Evertonians all hate him. We all know he went for the money, but another thing that makes us Evertonians mad are his comments after he completed the transfer! "I've been a Liverpool Fan all my life." He told us he was a Hull City Fan! Nick Barmby spent 4 years at Goodison Park, only producing the goods during one, and then left at the first opportunity!
