| Plunging into the Scottish market in search of reinforcements is nothing new. Everton have made a habbit of plucking from north of the border since their inception and it is a trend that will no doubt continue well into the millennium. We've all got to start somewhere. And several of the current Goodison crop just happened to have sowed their first footballing seeds on the same patch. You don't need a trained eye to see that Everton's Scottish contingent has grown in recent seasons. But it may take a closer examination to discover that a large portion of the Blues' tartan contingent bedded into footballing life wearing the orange of Dundee United. From the management staff down, traces of the Tannadice club can be found. Dundee United WALTER SMITH (pictured right) 1967: Joins Dundee Utd. Plays in the 1974 side that lost the Scottish Cup Final to Celtic 3-0. Later sold to Dumbarton for �7,000. Re-joined United in 1979 to take job on coaching staff under then manager Jim McLean. Left for Rangers in 1986 to become Graeme Souness's Number Two. ARCHIE KNOX 1972: Signs for Dundee Utd. Plays 56 times for the club scoring 12 goals. Leaves for Montrose in 1976. RICHARD GOUGH 1980: Signs for Dundee Utd on a free from Wits University, South Africa. Plays 160 league games for the club with eight appearances as a subsitute, scoring 24 goals. 1986: Leaves United for Tottenham Hotspur. ANDY GRAY 1973: Joins Dundee Utd where he stays for two |
