| Paul re-joined his former boss when Joe Royle signed him from Oldham in July 1996. Having played understudy to the legendary Neville Southall and more recently Thomas Myhre, Paul finally got his chance in season 1997/98, and enjoyed an outstanding performance and a clean sheet in the Coca-Cola Cup match at Scunthorpe. He finally established himself as first choice goalkeeper at Everton in season 1998/99 when he took advantage of an unfortunate injury to Thomas Myhre. Paul was rewarded for his splendid efforts by being given the number one jersey for the 2000/2001 season and has been tipped by England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence to be a future England goalkeeper. |
