1995 FA Cup Final
Everton 1 Manchester United 0
FA Cup Final, Saturday 15 May 1995
On the 15th May 1995, Joe Royle's Everton beat Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup for the fifth time. United, who had narrowly lost out to Blackburn Rovers in the Championship race one week earlier, were favourites to beat Royle's 'Dogs Of War'. But two rocks at the back for Everton in the shape of Captain Dave Watson and goalkeeper Neville Southall kept United at bay. Everton scored after 30 minutes, the goal coming from the head of Paul Rideout. Watson won a tackle with Ince in the Everton half and Anders Limpar ran the ball deep into United's half. Limpar released the ball to Matt Jackson, who turned a United defender before squaring it to Graham Stuart. Stuart's shot agonisingly hit the underside of the bar with the ball bouncing in the six-yard box. With Schmeichel helpless, Rideout cooly nodded home the rebound, under pressure from Irwin. Everton played well for the rest of the match and defended briliantly against some heavy United pressure at times. The better team won on the day, and Dave Watson lifted the FA Cup to the joy of the Evertonians. Everton returned to Wembley three months later to beat Champions Blackburn Rovers and win the FA Chairty Shield.
