Creative Arts Camp ROC's Into Action
The Recreation Outreach Centre (ROC) held its first ever week long Creative Arts Camp.  This project was made possible in part by a National Crime Prevention Community Mobilization grant.  We were very fortunate to be able to offer the opportunity to several young individuals aged 7-12 to be exposed to many different mediums of art. Different artisans graciously donated their time to demonstrate, inform and engage the children in their craft.

The tone of the week started on a very musical note with musician Dan Bone. He enchanted the children with his various brass instruments, creative teaching and original technique of conducting the children with instruments they created themselves. Hands down the highlight of this day was the trumpet created from a garden hose and a kitchen funnel!

Vanessa Pandos of Shattered Glass Studio awed the children with her step by step interactive stain glass workshop. The children chose several pieces of coloured recycled glass according to their preference of shape, colour and texture. They were fortunate to be able to incorporate these and many other treasures that Vanessa so kindly brought with her into interesting mobiles.

Monday and Tuesday afternoon Al Hazell came through for us once again. After just putting together an awesome youth drama demonstration he still had the energy to facilitate drama games and techniques to a camp full of drama queens and kings. Participants also had the opportunity to try their hand at photography and sand sculpting at the beach. Special thanks Jesse George for lifequarding. A visit to Art  in the County created an enviroment to broaden their young minds. However the highlight of the week by far was the field trip to Kingston Buskers Rendezvous where the children were wowed, thrilled, amused and amazed.

Overall the week was a success for the ROC. We would like to thank everyone who was involved.  Special thanks goes out to Katimivik participants Joanne Bouley and Patrick LeClair for their superior dedication and hard work.
