MATT AND DEYNA Note: This is based on a true story. All names have been changed to protect them and to better the story. It was Deyna's first day at his new school. He was nervous. Not because of bullies, he could deal with them. But the fact that he was new to America, hardly spoke English, and was bi hardly made him feel at ease. As he walked through the hallways of the school, he took in the sight of his schoolmates. So many species, so many languages and so many furs. Deyna suffered from Social Anxiety Disorder, and didn't do well in big crowds. He turned down the hall and stopped. He looked at the map and screwed up his face. This didn't look like the right hall. Lifting his head, he looked for someone to ask for help. "Excuse me, could you help me find room?" He asked a large bear in his broken English. The bear looked at him and laughed. "What's the matter Kraut? English to hard for you?" Deyna clenched his fists and bared his teeth, which didn't help much because of his being an otter with small teeth. The bear laughed again and saluted, in the worst way, like a nazi and yelled, "Zieg Heille!" That cut it. Deyna pulled his arm back and socked the bear right in the gut. The ursine let out a "whoosh" as the air left his chest. Deyna pulled back, then turned and did a hook kick across the bear's muzzle. Blood splattered everywhere as a tooth flew from the bear's lips. He fell to the ground, but was pulled up by the collar of his tee-shirt and found himself looking the otter square in his emerald green eyes. "I come to America for chance to make something of myself. Not to be laughed at by verdammt bigots like you!" He let the bear fall to the floor and stood up. "And for your information, I study jiu jitsu in Deustchland." When he turned to go back down the hall, he found himself face-to-face with the assistant principal. "Damn." was all he could say as he was escorted to the office. In the office of Mr. Richardson, Deyna sat with his paws on his lap. "Why did you attack that football player?" the large ox asked him. "He called me Nazi. I am not Nazi. I from Cologne." the otter replied in a small voice. He felt bad for hitting that bear, but he felt good for defending himself. And his family's honorable name. The bovine took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. "I see. Well, that is quite a wrong thing to say. But we don't condone fighting." He rifled through some papers and pulled out a detention slip. "I'm going to give you a detention for this afternoon, and that's all I'll give you. Please understand that this a light punishment, and that since this is a..... special case, I'm going to be lenient with you. But if this happens again, you will be suspended, do you understand, Mr. Otter?" Deyna nodded and sighed. He guessed he deserved it. "Mr. Ursuski, the bear whom insulted you, has suffered enough, don't you think?" the ox smiled and chuckled, "A missing fang and a bloody nose seemed pretty appropriate for the slur he used." he leaned across the desk and whispered, "And personally, I'm glad that you did what you did. Mr. Ursuski is such a snob, he needed to be humbled like that." Deyna giggled. "Alvays glad to help mit uppity furs." "Of course, now get to class, Mr. Otter." The otter walked out the door with his red bookbag and a certain bounce in his step. As he walked into the classroom, Mrs. Volpiks, an elderly vixen, smiled and said, "And you are?" "Otter. Deyna Otter. I am new student." "Oh, how interesting! Why don't you tell us about yourself?" Deyna blushed and whispered into her ear. "I don't speak English good." It was the vixen's turn to blush. Then she whispered back, "Oh my, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to put you on the spot. I can get the German teacher in here to translate for you." "I vould greatly appreciate that, Frau Volpiks." After a lengthy introduction to the class, Deyna sat down and opened up his English book. All through the class, furs kept turning to look at him. He caught the words of a whispered conversation between a lioness and a mink. "Isn't that the guy who beat up John Ursuski?" Deyna smiled. He could see the headline in the gossip column; GIANT FOOTBALL PLAYER GETS WHOOPED BY SKINNY FOREIGNER. The day went by nicely. He wasn't picked on by any more idiot jocks, his teachers were real nice to him and most of his classmates were patient with his English. Still, he was glad the day was over. He could go home and relax now. Then he remembered. He had a detention. As he groaned out loud, he slapped his head with the heel of his paw. He turned around and walked back to the doors. Inside the detention room, Deyna sat with an open notebook, writing down things he needed to do that afternoon. He put down his pencil and looked around the room. The other furs in the room didn't seem to be enjoying themselves either. Well almost everyfur. Two male otters were sitting next to each other, holding paws and talking quietly. He looked around more and his eyes fell upon a very handsome raccoon. The raccoon had five earrings in each of his triangular ears, was wearing blue jeans and a Rammstein tee-shirt. As he stared at this fine hunk of meat, he observed more things. He was about five-foot-eleven-inches tall, had long white hair with a ponytail and hair covering his right eye. Deyna looked at just about every square inch of him, and then he noticed something on his black bookbag. A patch. A pride patch. He was gay! Deyna nearly gasped out loud. The raccoon turned towards Deyna, but Deyna turned quickly to his notebook. "Mr. Raker, is there something wrong?" The raccoon turned to the wolf teacher and shook his head. "No Mr. Canids, nothing's wrong. And please don't call me 'Mister' anything, it makes me feel old." Mr. Canids chuckled and replied, "All right then, Matthew. You're too young to feel old, I agree with that." He looked at the clock and sighed, "Well, youngsters, it's time to go. I bid you farewell, and please, stay out of trouble." Deyna stood at the crosswalk, waiting for the light to switch. He sighed and suddenly felt something wet hit his fur. He looked up and saw black clouds. Then he felt more drops of water. It was going to rain. And he didn't have an umbrella, a hat, or a jacket. He would have pnuemonia before he got home. Then he heard a roar, but it wasn't thunder. He turned and saw a beautiful sportscar coming his way. It stopped in front of him and the window rolled down. One of the otters from the detention room stuck his head out. "Want a ride?" he asked. Deyna looked at the sky, then to the otter. "Ja." Inside the sportscar, Deyna introduced himself. "I am Deyna." He shook paws with the smaller otter. "My name's David. Nice t'meetcha." He pointed to the larger otter that was driving. "This is the love of my life, Hoss. Isn't he the cutest thing you've ever seen?" Hoss turned to David and smiled. "Please, squeeker, don't embarrass me in front of our new friend." David narrowed his eyes, and turned to the window. "Don't call me squeeker." Deyna turned to Hoss and said, "You are gay, right?" Hoss smiled and nodded, "Yup. Just like yourself." That made Deyna's heart stop for a second. Maybe two seconds. "Bi. But how could you tell?" Hoss looked in the rearview mirror. "The way you were looking at Matt back there sorta told me everything." Deyna smiled as his head sunk a bit. "Ja. Vell, he is cute and funny." David turned to Hoss. "Matt Raker? Wasn't he in your Algebra class last year?" Hoss screwed up his face in thought. "Yeah he was, but he had shorter hair." He looked at Deyna in the mirror. "Are we almost to your house?" Deyna pointed to a street and said. "Das ist it." Hoss looked at the street and started to laugh. Deyna looked at David and saw that he too was laughing silently. "Vhat? Vhat? Did I miss someting?" David pointed to the street that was just a block away. "Hoss and I live on that street." The three otters started to laugh together. "Why don't you come to my house, Deyna? We can talk some more." Deyna looked at Hoss and smiled. "I vould like that, meine feunde." Inside Hoss's house, the trio sat in the living room, drinking soda and eating potato chips. Deyna was having so much fun, he didn't want it to end. But like all good things, it did. As he walked home he found himself thinking of the raccoon, named Matt Raker. He had asked Hoss about Matt, to the point that he felt he knew him like a friend. But it only made him sad, because he didn't know him. Matt probably didn't know he existed. Oh, the troubles of being a bisexual teenager. He knew that from this point on, his life in America wouldn't be an easy one. He faced new challenges and a new world. He hung his head. He wasn't even used to the water yet. That night, Deyna ran over to Hoss's house and knocked furiously at the door. The door opened and a very pretty otteress stood there. "May I help you?" Deyna smiled and said "Ja, ist Hoss here? I vanted to talk to him. Are you his mother?" The otteress smiled and led him in. "Yes, I'm Hoss's mom." She pointed to the stairs. "Third door on the left is Hoss's room." "Danke schoene." He bounded up the stairs and knocked on the door. "C'mon in." As he walked in, he could smell the horomones lingering in the air. He looked at Hoss who was sitting on his bed with David in his arms. "Vas I interupting someting?" he asked with a mysterious smile. "D., how are you?" Hoss said. "We were just studying." David laughed at the confused look on Deyna's face. "What's up?" he said, snuggling in closer to Hoss. Deyna sat on the ground and laid back, looking at the ceiling. "Vell, I can't get Matt off meine mind. He ist all I think about now." He closed his eyes and sighed. "Und I am sure he von't like me." David looked at Hoss and frowned. "Isn't that depressing, sweety?" Hoss remained silent. Soon he was lost in thought. He smiled and looked at Deyna. "How 'bout we go on a date this weekend, just the three of us. We can go down to the diner, go putt-putt or play video games at the arcade." Deyna perked up at the thought. "Ja, I vould like that. I haven't had fun since ve moved." He looked at his watch and leapt up. "Speaking of vhich, I have to get back und finish unpacking. I vill see you at school tomorrow. Auf veidersehen." As soon as he left, Hoss started to chuckle softly. He picked up his cordless and punched in a number. "Hey dude, it's Hoss! I'm great, you? Awesome. I wanted to ask you, are you busy Saturday?" SATURDAY AFTERNOON Deyna stepped out into the bright afternoon sun and breathed in deeply. As he put on his sunglasses, he smiled. He was going to have fun with new friends. He was going to take his mind off a certain raccoon. He ran and jumped, turning his body in the air, landing on his front paws. He shifted his weight and landed on his foot-paws. He had had a rough week, and he felt he deserved a nice time out. Hoss leaned against his car, chuckling softly to himself. David sat in the front seat, chatting softly with the other passenger in the back. Hoss picked his head up as he saw Deyna approaching slowly. He smiled and waved. "Deyna! Hurry up!" Deyna smiled in turn and flipped onto his front paws and proceded to backflip all the way to the car. On the last flip, he landed safely on his foot-paws, facing Hoss. "Guten tag!" Hoss punched him softly in the shoulder. "Show-off." "Vhat is the point of having skills, vhen you can't 'show-off'" He walked towards the car and waved to David. "Guten tag, David!" David waved back, with a wide smile. "Hey there." Deyna turned to the back seat. His jaw dropped. It was Matt. He turned to Hoss, only to find Hoss was sitting in the driver's seat. Deyna popped into the back seat and held out a tentative paw. "I am Deyna." Matt took his paw and shook it, then he pulled it to his lips and kissed it. "I'm Matthew. A pleasure to meet you.” Deyna swallowed and smiled. “Likevise.” And that was the beginning of a beautiful and wonderful relationship. To be continued….. Deyna T.
