2007 Ping Pong Tournament Rules

1.  The ping pong tournament will be either a double or triple elimination tournament based on the number of participants.

2.  The tournament bracket will be released Friday, February 23rd, at which point the tournament will officially begin.  The tournament will then last for the next two weeks and should be completed before the last day before spring break, Friday, March 9th.

3.  For each match, the two contestants will agree on a time to play at their own availability.  If one player does not show up at the agreed upon time, the other player will automatically win by forfeit unless they want to try to set up another time.

4.  Please try to play your matches within a couple of days of finding out who your next opponent is so that we can keep the tournament moving in a timely fashion.

5.  Contact information with each player’s phone number and email will be given to facilitate setting up match times.  Also, there will be a Facebook group.  It’s up to you how you want to contact your next opponent – phone, email, or facebook – but if you don’t do it within a few days, you will be subject to forfeit.

6.  A tournament bracket will be posted in the Underground.  After a match is completed, please write the result on the bracket.  If it already determined who your next opponent will be, it is your responsibility to contact him/her and set up a match.  If it not yet determined who your next opponent will be, wait for him/her to play his/her match and contact you.

7.  If you need ping pong paddles and/or balls, please let Matt Kauffman know (Room Extension - 6332, Cell Phone – (803)447-6712, Email – [email protected]), and he can provide some for you to use.

8.  Game Rules (from http://www.union.nova.edu/sports/ping_pong.html)

a)  Choice of ends and serves
The choice of ends and the right to serve or receive first in a match shall be decided by the toss of a coin. The winner of the toss may choose to serve or receive first and then the loser has the choice of ends or the winner can choose an end and then the loser shall have the right to choose to serve or receive first. The player who started at one end in a game shall start at the other end in the immediately subsequent game and so on until the end of the match. If the match goes to a third and final game, the players shall change ends when a player reaches the score of 10. After a player has reached the score of ten and the players have changed ends, there will be no more change of ends the remainder of the game. After five points, the receiver shall become the server and so on until the end of the game or the score 20 -20. If both players have scored 20 points the sequence of serving and receiving shall remain the same but each player shall server only one point in turn until the end of the game. The player who served first in a game shall receive first in the immediately subsequent game and so on until the end of the match.

b)  Service

  1. At the start of service, the ball shall rest freely on the open, flat palm of the free hand and shall be stationary, above the level of the playing surface, and behind the server's end line.
  2. The ball and the racket shall be above the level of the playing surface and behind the end line of the server's court or an imaginary extension thereof from the last moment at which the ball is stationary on the palm of the free hand until the ball is struck in service.
  3. The server shall then project the ball near vertically upwards, by hand only and without imparting spin, so that it rises at least 6 inches after leaving the palm of the hand.
  4. As the ball is then descending from the height of its trajectory, the server shall strike it so that it touches first his/her own court and then, passing directly over the net or around or under the projection of the net and its supports outside the table, touches the receiver's court.

c)  Let
A rally is a let:

  1. If the ball served, in passing over or around the net, touches it or the net assembly, provided the serve is otherwise good or is volleyed by the receiver.
  2. If the service is delivered when, in the opinion of the umpire, the receiving player is not ready, provided that the receiver does not attempt to strike the ball.
  3. If the conditions of play are disturbed in a way which, in the opinion of the umpire, is likely to affect the outcome of the rally

d)  Scoring:

Point
Unless the rally is a let, a player shall score the point:

  1. If the opponent fails to make a good service.
  2. If the opponent fails to make a good return.
  3. If the opponent obstructs the ball, except as provided in definition 4f.
  4. If the ball touches the opponent's court and then again the playing surface (bounces twice).
  5. If the opponent strikes the ball twice successively.
  6. If the opponent, or anything worn or carried, moves the playing surface, or touches the net or the supports while the ball is in play.
  7. If the opponent's free hand touches the playing surface while the ball is in play.
  8. If the ball passes over his/her court or beyond the end line without touching his/her court after being struck by his opponent.

Game
A game shall be won by the player first scoring 21 points unless both players have scored 20 points. In this case, the winner shall be the player first scoring 2 points more than the opposing player. The winner who wins two out of three games will win the match.
