This album was released October 17, 1977 and marked
one of the greatest tragedies in Rock and Roll. The
band was trying to live down the rough and rowdy
redneck image they had built. Ronnie had always said
that they were just "street people" trying to write
"common songs for the common people". That combined
with the turbulence they had been through from the
beginning. He decided to name this album "Street
Survivors" to symbolize the fulfillment of his dream.
On October 20, three days after the albums release,
and only four shows into their "Tour of the
Survivors", Skynyrd's private Corvair 240 turbo prop
plane ran out of gas on the way from Greenville,
South Carolina to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, causing it
to crash in a forest near McComb, Mississippi. Ronnie
Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines, and assistant road
manager Dean Kirkpatrick were killed instantly.
A short while later the albums cover would be changed. The fire would be removed and replaced with a black background.
