SuFFrAgE
National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies The most significant campaign for suffrage was in Britain. There were two major suffrage societies: the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) and the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU). The NUWSS was formed in 1897, with an aim “to promote the claim of women to the parliamentary vote on the same terms as it is or may be granted to men.” This group did not demand the vote for all women, but they wanted women to be placed on an equal footing with the men who already had the vote. The members of NUWSS were called suffragists, and campaigned for their cause through peaceful, moderate and law-abiding methods, such as petitions.
