Covenants: The Mysterious Timelines of God

Sections:

INTRODUCTION

This study will focus on the length a generation and clues to how God, who is outside of our time domain, uses COVENANTS as his timeline. The key to understanding this study is, believe it or not, a verse tucked within one of the genealogies of the gospels:

Mat 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

Looking at all the subjects or participants in this verse, have the following:

  1. Abraham
  2. David
  3. The carrying away into Babylon
  4. Christ

ABRAHAM, DAVID, BABYLON, CHRIST

What do all these have in common? Covenants. Consider the following:

  1. Abraham: God established a covenant with Abraham for the land of Israel and with Abraham's seed.
  2. Gen 15:18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

Gen 17:7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

  3. David: God established a covenant with David for his seed to have an everlasting throne which would rule from Zion or Jerusalem. David was from the tribe of Judah, and from his seed the promised Messiah would come, Jesus Christ, the lion of the tribe of Judah.
  4. Psa 89:3 I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,

Psa 132:11 The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.

Psa 132:13 For the LORD hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation.

Psa 132:14 This is my rest forever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.

Psa 132:17 There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.

From this passage, we see that part of the Davidic covenant was that Zion, or Jerusalem, was the place the Lord "desired", and from where the "fruit of his body" would rule eternally.

  5. The carrying away into Babylon: The Israelites broke the Mosaic covenant that God established As promised in Jeremiah and II Chronicles, for disobeying the commandments of the covenant with God, the Israelites were to be in bondage to the Babylonian empire for 70 years. First, the covenant was established in Exodus:
  6. Exo 31:13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.

Exo 31:14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

Exo 31:15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

Exo 31:16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.

Exo 31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel forever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

But the Israelites disobeyed the covenant in every way possible. For 490 years, the Israelites failed to let the land rest on the seventh year. We see in II Chronicles the reason why the Israelites were carried away into Babylon:

2Ch 36:16 But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

2Ch 36:17 Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand.

2Ch 36:18 And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes; all these he brought to Babylon.

2Ch 36:19 And they burnt the house of God, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.

2Ch 36:20 And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:

2Ch 36:21 To fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfill threescore and ten years.

The prophecy in Jeremiah that passage refers to is as follows:

Jer 25:11 And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.

Jer 25:12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the LORD, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.

  7. Christ: God established the new covenant with mankind through Jesus Christ in fulfillment of all the law and the prophets with his death on the cross.
  8. Heb 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

Heb 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Heb 12:24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

THE KEY TO UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY

Having established that the four subjects above - Abraham, David, Babylon and Christ - were indeed involved in covenants with God's chosen, what does that tell us? By looking at how many generations were involved, we can see something very interesting.

Between each covenant participant was fourteen generations according Matthew 1:1-17:

David to Babylonian Captivity

14 GENERATIONS

14 GENERATIONS

14 GENERATIONS

The odd thing, however, is if you were to add up the NUMBER OF YEARS in these three sets of 14 generations, the number of years is NOT THE SAME. Herein lies the key to understanding this: the Holy Spirit is TELLING US TO LOOK AT THE COVENANTS, NOT THE NUMBER OF YEARS, IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND HOW GOD USES THE DIMENSION OF TIME!

God is not constrained by time as we are. He is omniscient, and sees past, present and future ALL AT THE SAME TIME. But, since we are confined to the time dimension, God uses that dimension in the way he sees fit. In this verse, he is trying to give us a clue to understand how he uses time.

Consider this table:

Covenant Participant

Covenant Established

Number of Generations Between Covenant Participant

Number of Years per Generation

Abraham

Land of Israel & Abraham's seed to be God's people

---

David

Messianic seed from his loins to rule eternally from Zion, or Jerusalem

14

???

Babylon

Mosaic covenant is broken by the Hebrew people

14

???

Jesus Christ

New covenant established on better promises

14

???

If you were to add up all the years that each member of the first fourteen generations lived, and compare it to the other two sets of fourteen generations, the result would not be equal. Some kings lived much longer than other kings. In addition, there are several kings in the line of descent from Abraham to Christ that are LEFT OUT of Matthew's genealogy, just so his genealogy would be made up of three sets of fourteen generations.

So, what is the Holy Spirit is telling us? He is telling us following:

  1. that the NUMBER OF YEARS IN THOSE GENERATIONS IS NOT IMPORTANT
  2. that the NUMBER OF PEOPLE IS NOT IMPORTANT
  3. that the LENGTH OF A GENERATION IS UNKNOWABLE, and
  4. that GOD KEEPS TIME BY COVENANTS

CONFUSION ABOUT THE LENGTH OF A GENERATION

Many have tried to look in scripture to try to calculate the length of a generation. There are several passages in Scripture where we are told the length of a particular generation:

  1. Israelite captivity in Egypt.
  2. Gen 15:13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

Gen 15:14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

Gen 15:16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.

Here we see that the length of a generation was 100 years, four generations divided into 400 years.

  3. The Israelites generation of disobedience.
  4. Num 32:13 And the LORD's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed.

Psa 95:10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:

Here we see that the length of a generation was 40 years.

  5. The number of generations in the life of Job.
  6. Job 42:16 After this lived Job a hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.

Job lived 140 years, four generations. 140 divided into four is 35 years, so the length of a generation was 35 years in Job's day.

So we have a generation being 100 years long, then 40 years long, then 35 years long. It appears that the length of a generation was dependent on WHEN a person lived. From the time of the flood, the age of man decreased steadily, and therefore, so did the length of a generation. See chart below:

The point is that the definite length of a generation is not ascertainable. What IS ascertainable, though, is that God counts his time by covenants.

"THIS GENERATION SHALL NOT PASS AWAY..."

The following verse has produced a mountain of essays, articles, papers and books, trying to calculate or otherwise ascertain the length of the final generation, but more importantly, to determine to which generation Jesus was referring when he said it:

Mat 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

"All these things" include a plethora of events described in Matthew 24, including the second coming of Jesus Christ to the earth, therefore, we know "this generation" extends until the end of the tribulation. People have long tried to pinpoint the trigger date for the BEGINNING of "this generation", to be able to know when these things will take place. Some of the most common recent trigger dates have been:

  1. 1948 - Israel is a nation again, back in her land.
  2. Many will remember the former best-selling book "88 Reasons Why Jesus Will Come in 1988". The author of this book looked at 1948, decided that a generation is 40 years long, and surmised that everything would wrap up in 1988, 40 years after Israel was back in her land. Obviously, this prediction didn't work out.

  3. 1967 - Jerusalem is reestablished as the capitol of Israel, taken in the 6-day war.

Others have looked at 1967, added 40 years, and came up with 2007 as the year things will come to a climax. As of September 6, 2003, it doesn't appear as if we can squeeze a 7 year tribulation into 5 years.

Look again at Matthew 24:34, and you will see that we MUST understand of whom Jesus was speaking when he said "This generation". Was he referring to the generation he repeatedly addressed as a "generation of vipers", the generation to which he was speaking in the Olivet discourse? Or was he speaking of a future generation that would see all the things he was referring to?

  1. The generation he was addressing in the Olivet discourse - it is obvious that this was not the generation Jesus was referring to when he said "this generation shall not pass away". Yes, from 67 to 70 A.D., the Jews fled into the wilderness, yes, the temple was defiled, yes, there was a comet seen over Jerusalem, and yes, there was an earthquake. But Jesus did not come in the clouds with power and great glory, nor did the angels gather his elect from the four winds. There was no abomination of desolation set up in the temple in 70 A.D. either. Therefore, this cannot be the generation Jesus was referring to.
  2. A future generation that would see all these things come to pass - this is more likely, but still does not give us a trigger date, or a starting point at which to beginning counting, NOR do we yet know how long a generation is.

A "CHOSEN GENERATION"

Since Jesus didn't come back within the generation of people to which he was speaking that day, he HAD to be referring to a future generation. There is an interesting verse in I Peter that states:

1Pe 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:

Is it possible that the generation Jesus was referring to was the entire chosen generation of grace, beginning with the death on the cross until his return at the end of the tribulation? Peter called the church a "chosen generation" - ONE FULL GENERATION, not several generations. Is it possible Jesus was telling us that the future chosen generation of believers would not pass away until everything he stated was fulfilled? This generation has lasted nearly 2,000 years thus far.

Don't mistake this with the church age, which ends withthe pre-tribulation rapture of the church. This generation of grace would extend to the end of the tribulation and include the 144,000 Jews and all the tribulation saints and martyrs converted during the tribulation. All may believe in Christ's redemption and obtain salvation just as those prior to the rapture up until the end of the tribulation, and enter into the millennial kingdom with Christ. When Jesus Christ returns to the earth the second time, however, this ends the generation of grace and ushers in the millennial kingdom.

Remember, God counts time by using COVENANTS, as we saw from Matthew 1:17. Jesus was the mediator of the NEW COVENANT, and at his death, that new covenant began. When that new covenant ends, or when the dispensation of the grace of God comes to an end, that elusive final generation will finally end. We can know the times and seasons of his return, but we cannot know the dates when that generation of grace will end.

Isn't it time to stop trying to calculate on what date the final generation began and will conclude? The current popular idea is to count anywhere from 40 to 51 years from 1967 and place the rapture around 2007 or 2011, but as we showed above, calculating the length of a generation is futile. God's covenant timeline for the chosen generation began with Jesus death on the cross and will extend until....

THE FULLNESS OF THE GENTILES

There will be a point in time when the Gentile nations will be completely reached with the gospel, and their time is full. Consider the following verses:

Rom 11:25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in.

Luk 21:24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

These verses tell us that there will be a time in the future of which only God Almighty is aware, in which the timeline for Gentile nations to come to know the gospel truth, and to have their way in the nations, will end. Jesus Christ will then set up a kingdom and rule it with a rod of iron from Jerusalem. The key to understand, though, is that the chosen generation Peter referrred to will end when the fulness of the Gentiles ends, and God turns his attention back to his Abrahamic and Davidic covenants.

THE RESTITUTION OF ALL THINGS

The keeping of the Abrahamic and Davidic covenants - covenants that were promised to be eternal - may be part of what Peter had in mind when he stated the following on the day of Pentecost, the birth of the church:

Act 3:20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:

Act 3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

So, Jesus Christ will be in heaven, according to this passage, until a time comes to reinstitute and restore all things back to their original owners. While it's impossible for us to know how "all things" will be restored, we see clues in prophetic scriptures about certain things being restored.

  1. Israel must be a nation again before Jesus Christ can come again:
  2. Hos 3:4 For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim:

Hos 3:5 Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days.

Isa 66:7 Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child.

Isa 66:8 Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

Isa 66:9 Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the LORD: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? saith thy God.

Those who know history know that Israel declared itself to be a nation on May 14, 1948, in one day, following the horrific Holocaust. This is a direct fulfillment of the passage in Isaiah.

  3. Jerusalem must be restored to prominence and become the capitol of Israel from where Christ will reign.
  4. Psa 102:16 When the LORD shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.

Psa 102:17 He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.

Psa 102:18 This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD.

According to this passage, in order for the Lord to appear in his glory, Zion had to be built up. Zion is the Old Testament name for Jerusalem, and Mount Zion is a mountain in Jerusalem. This passage was written for "the generation to come", which is the Hebrew word "acharon". That word literally means the last, final or concluding generation.

  5. The Jews would come back to Israel from the north, south, east and west.
  6. Isa 43:5 Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;

    Isa 43:6 I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;

Isa 49:12 Behold, these shall come from far: and, lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.

Jews are coming from all parts of the earth currently, back to Israel, but in the future, the exodus will pick up steam. God will draw his people back to their land and things will become so bleak and dire that no one will believe God could possibly save Israel. It will be at that time, the end of Daniel's 70th week, that he will demonstrate his saving power, send Jesus Christ to earth to fight the rebellious Gentile nations, save Israel, destroy the antichrist regime, bind Satan and set up the millennial kingdom.

  7. There will be a third Jewish temple constructed in Jerusalem.
  8. Rev 11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.

Rev 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

If the Gentiles are going to trample down the outer court of the temple for 42 months, and we know from Revelation 13 that the beast antichrist is given power for 42 months, it follows that there must be a Jewish temple in Jerusalem for them to trample on in the future where there currently is not one. There are several other verses which indicate a temple will be present when the antichrist invades Jerusalem at the midpoint of Daniel's 70th week.

There are many other possibilities for the meaning of "the restitution of all things". These may include but are not limited to the following:

LEARN THE PARABLE OF THE FIG TREE

There is no doubt that Israel being a nation again was the KEY event for prophetic scriptures to begin to be completely fulfilled. Jesus told us this would be the case in Matthew 24, just after describing events in the tribulation:

Mat 24:32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:

Mat 24:33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

Mat 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

It is clear from scripture that Israel is the fig tree:

Luk 13:6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.

Luk 13:7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why encumbereth it the ground?

Luk 13:8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:

Luk 13:9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

Parable Phrase

Explanation

"the certain man"

God

"vineyard"

The land of Israel; a vineyard produces grapes

"fig tree"

The Jewish people, within the vineyard of grapes, is the fig tree.

"fruit"

God is seeking for fruit: an obedient people who stay true to him, follow his commandments and listen to his prophets. He found none on his fig tree, the Jewish people.

"dresser of the vineyard"

Jesus Christ, the dresser or creator of the world.

"three years"

Jesus' time on earth preaching and teaching, beginning in Luke chapter 4 at 30 years of age when he formally announced the beginning of his ministry in the temple.

"dig about it, and dung it"

Jesus' ministry was not to call the righteous, but the sinners to repentance. He was sent to the lost sheep of Israel, which included the religious Jews in Israel.

If the Jewish people are the fig tree, as the parable in Luke suggests, then we can understand more about the parable of the fig tree on Mount Olivet:

Mat 24:32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:

Mat 24:33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

Parable Phrase

Explanation

"the fig tree"

the Jewish people

"branch is yet tender"

Soon after the Jewish people are back in the vineyard, the land of Israel; not a long period

"putteth forth leaves"

The signs Jesus described begin to be evident in and around Israel

"know that summer is nigh"

Know that the season for return of Jesus is near, even at the doors

Another interesting verse that mentions a fig tree, along with an interesting reference to the rapture of the church, is found in the Old Testament book Song of Solomon:

Son 2:10 My beloved spoke, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.

Son 2:11 For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;

Son 2:12 The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;

2:13 The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.

THE LATTER RAIN

There are several interesting verses that indicate there will be a latter rain just before Jesus Christ comes for his bride, then later returns to the earth to rule. To understand this, we need to look at the birth of the church and the related feasts of Israel.

The Christian "church" was born on the feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was given in the city of Jerusalem for the first time with a "Pentecostal measure"; the Comforter whom Jesus referred to:

Joh 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

Joh 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.

Act 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

In these awesome verses, Jesus Christ tells us about what the Pentecostal measure of the Holy Spirit on the church will give to us, and the power we will have through him. The Spirit had always been present and came upon God's people at times all throughout the Old Testament. However, the day of Pentecost marked a different, empowering measure. It also was marked a special sign of infilling: the ability to speak in an unknown language, which served as proof of the infilling:

Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The events on the day of Pentecost, the birth of the church, are known as the early or former rain. The feast of Pentecost occurred 50 days after the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The early rain was poured out on the physical land of Israel during this time of the year, to water the growing crops. After the Feast of Pentecost, about four months separate the next feast, the Feast of Trumpets, or Rosh Hashannah. During this time of the year, there is very little rain in the land. Then, as the fall feasts approach, the climate changes and the autumn rains soon begin.

Rain represents the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The scriptures reveal that the Lord will come as rain to the earth:

Hos 6:3 Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

Jam 5:7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

Joe 2:23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.

Zec 10:1 Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.

Notice the theme of these verses is THE COMING OF THE LORD in combination with the latter rain:

As we prophetically come closer to the time of the Lord's return, nations will hear the gospel and many will experience the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, which is the early and latter rain. In fact we are in the greatest outpouring of the Spirit since the time of the first century church! The latter rain is being poured out just as scripture says it would, and according to prophecy, this is when the Lord returns.

These prophetic insights and ideas are extremely interesting, and pertinent to the future of mankind. I believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, written by men who wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit (II Peter 1:21), therefore, I believe that all events prophesied in the Bible WILL come to pass.

The main reason for my presentation of these prophetic insights is to have readers understand that a time is coming when the righteous will be removed from the earth, and the wrath of God will be unleashed on those who did not accept his Son Jesus Christ as a sacrifice for their sins. Eternity is too long to spend away from God, in eternal hellfire instead of eternal paradise. Please don't delay....click the link below:
