THE ENTRANCE TO THE BOTTOMLESS PIT
Is the oil refinery island, Abadan Island in Iran, the opening to the abyss or the bottomless pit?
Scripture: Revelation 9:1-11
Rev 9:1
And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.Rev 9:2
And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.Rev 9:3
And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.Rev 9:4
And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.Rev 9:5
And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.Rev 9:6
And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.Rev 9:7
And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.Rev 9:8
And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.Rev 9:9
And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.Rev 9:10
And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.Rev 9:11
And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
Building the Case for Abadan, Iran
As we read from Revelation 9:11, the king of the demon locusts that come out of the smoke of the bottomless is named Abaddon in Hebrew and Apollyon in Greek. This word has the meaning of "Destroyer" in both Greek and Hebrew, but I will concentrate on the Hebrew word "Abaddon". To answer the question posed above, let's break the discussion into separate points.
When we read verses 1 and 2, we can conclude that yes, the bottomless pit is located somewhere on the earth. Verse 1 says the "star" fell to the earth, and the star, called a "him", was given a key to the bottomless pit. Verse 2 says the messenger star has a key to the pit, and he opens it. Another clue that the pit is on the earth is that, after it is opened and the smoke comes out of it, both the sun and the air are darkened by the smoke. Air is on the earth, and the sun becoming darkened is from the perspective of a person on the earth.
This is answer is probably no. This is due to another verse in Revelation which states that there is an angel in heaven who still has the key to the bottomless pit:
Rev 20:1
And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.After this, Satan is cast into this bottomless pit for 1,000 years. So, we see that in Revelation 9, an angel has a key to this pit, and again in chapter 20, the angel still has the key to the pit.
There are three main clues from scripture that this pit is located in the Middle East, specifically in the area of ancient Babylon:
Rev 9:14
Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.Rev 16:12
And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.The Euphrates River is located in the country of Iraq, and is mentioned in the earliest periods just after creation. The events in Revelation 9 and 16 take place in the middle eastern territory of Iraq, because that is where the Euphrates River is located. In the first instance, four angels bound in that river are released and unleash a deadly attack on humans that take on 1/4 of mankind. In the second instance, this river is dried up for a period in order to allow the "kings of the east" to cross over and enter the battle of Armageddon.
Isa 14:4
That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!Isa 14:12
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!Isa 14:13
For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:Isa 14:14
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.Isa 14:15
Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.Rev 20:2
And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,Rev 20:3
And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.So, we see that Satan was called the king of Babylon in Isaiah's day, a city which was located in modern day Iraq. We know it is Satan because in verse 12 this king of Babylon is called Lucifer, and his actions are described...actions which we know where actions of Satan. Furthermore, verse 15 states he will be brought down to the pit, which is the bottomless pit. We will see this fulfilled when Revelation 20:2-3 is fulfilled, where Satan is cast into the bottomless pit.
The key of this prophecy is to realize that Satan is called the king of Babylon, and Babylon was in modern day Iraq. In fact, there is abundant evidence that Saddam Hussein is rebuilding ancient Babylon with instructions left behind by ancient king Nebuchadnezzar. Consider this statement by Qusai Hussein, the son of Saddam Hussein:

This quote should make anyone versed in Biblical prophecy shudder. Combine all this with the activity involving the Euphrates River in Revelation, which is located in modern day Iraq, and there is little doubt that the major activity will be located near modern day Iraq.
Notice the island sits right on the border of Iraq and Iran. The island sits at the opening of the Persian Gulf, near to where both the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers dump into the Gulf, and it is smack in the middle of the middle east.

Based on this presentation, several facts have been established:
Based on these facts, I believe it is altogether possible that the entrance to the bottomless pit is Abadan Island, Iran.
