UNDERSTANDING DANIEL'S SEVENTY WEEKS

PART I - Foundation

Gabriel's revelation to Daniel of the seventy weeks is the most important prophecy in scripture, because it illuminates the future of Israel and Jerusalem from the time of their Babylonian captivity until the battle of Armageddon, and it reveals the exact date of Jesus' triumphal entry as the Messiah into Jerusalem. As you will discover, the prophecy has experienced partial, but not complete, fulfillment. The pinpoint accuracy of the prophecy so far fulfilled is simply amazing, and there is no reason to believe that the rest of the prophecy won't be fulfilled in the same fashion. Understanding this prophecy is essential to understanding the rest of biblical prophecy, as well as the future of Israel.

How important was this prophecy to understanding the timing and structure of end-time events? Jesus himself referred to this prophecy when explaining to his disciples what would happen in the last days of history:

"24:15 "So when you see ‘the abomination of desolation’—spoken about by Daniel the prophet—standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), 24:16 then those in Judea must flee to the mountains."

Jesus tells us what will happen, where it will happen, and what the Jews will do when it happens. But he also tells us who wrote the book of Daniel, established its much debated authenticity, and that the abomination of desolation happens in the future. There can be no doubt, then, that the prophecy of the seventy weeks is an important prophecy to understand.

Gabriel's Prophecy to Daniel

Daniel lived in Babylon for 70 years after being taken by king Nebuchadnezzar in the Babylonian exile. God gave him a series of visions about the future of the nation of Israel. God told Jeremiah in 25:11 that the nation of Israel would be in Babylonian captivity for 70 years:

"25:11 This whole area will become a desolate wasteland. These nations will be subject to the king of Babylon for seventy years."

Daniel was fasting and praying to God about this in the time frame of 536BC, and he remembered this word from Jeremiah. The scripture says Daniel was praying during the time of the evening sacrifice, which is amazing given the fact that the Israelites weren't in Jerusalem and had no temple or altar with which to perform the evening sacrifice.

The nation of Israel was taken into Babylonian captivity in 605AD, so the 70 years were almost up, and Daniel was now around the age of 80 years old. Daniel was intensely praying for the sins of the priesthood and asking God if he was going to keep his promise about the 70 years. The angel of the Lord appeared and gave him a vision about the future, and the major part of the vision is found in Daniel 9:24-27:

"9:24 "Seventy weeks have been determined

concerning your people and your holy city

to finish the transgression,

to bring sin to completion,

to atone for iniquity,

to bring in everlasting righteousness,

to seal up the prophetic vision,

and to anoint a most holy place.

9:25 So know and understand:

from the going forth of the message to return and build

Jerusalem until the anointed one, the prince,

there are seven weeks and sixty-two weeks.

It will again be built, with plaza and moat,

but in distressful times.

9:26 Now after the sixty-two weeks,

the anointed one will be cut off and have nothing.

As for the city and the sanctuary,

the people of the coming prince will destroy them.

But his end will come speedily like a flood,

until the end of the war that has been decreed;

there will be desolations.

9:27 He will confirm a covenant with many

for one week. But in the middle of that week

he will bring sacrifice and offering to a halt

on the wing of a desolating abomination,

until the decreed end is poured out on the one who makes desolate."

This prophecy mentions several things that will happen in the future, including:

  1. The city and temple of Jerusalem would be destroyed by the people of a "coming prince" (v. 26)
  2. The Jews will return to Jerusalem and rebuild the city (v. 25)
  3. There would be a Messiah that will come and be killed (v. 26)
  4. There will be a prince come in the future that will confirm a covenant with Israel for 7 years (v. 26,27)
  5. In the middle of the week he will break the covenant, and make the city of Jerusalem desolate because of abomination he performs in the temple (v. 27)

Understanding the Term "Weeks"

Why didn't the Lord just say 490 years, instead of seventy weeks? Because the Jews were familiar with the term "week", and Daniel, also a Jew, would also be aware of the term. The term week is used extensively throughout the Torah, but its first use can be found in the story of Jacob and Laban, when Jacob was working for him in order to receive Rachel as his wife, but instead was given Leah:

"29:27 Complete my older daughter’s bridal week. Then we will give you the younger one too, in exchange for seven more years of work." 29:28 Jacob did as Laban said. When Jacob completed Leah’s bridal week, Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife."

The term week used here is "shebu'ah", the same term used in Daniel 9:24. There were many holy times in Israel under the covenant made with the Hebrews after the exodus from Egypt. Two that will help us understand this prophecy are as follows:

  1. The Sabbatical Year (Lev 25:3-5)
  2. "25:3 Six years you may sow your field, and six years you may prune your vineyard and gather the produce, 25:4 but in the seventh year the land must have a Sabbath of complete rest—a Sabbath to the Lord. You must not sow your field or prune your vineyard. 25:5 You must not gather in the aftergrowth of your harvest and you must not pick the grapes of your unpruned vines; the land must have a year of complete rest."

  3. The Year of Jubilee (Lev 25:8-12)

25:8 ‘You must count off seven weeks of years, seven times seven years, and the days of the seven weeks of years will amount to forty-nine years. 25:9 You must sound loud horn blasts—in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, on the Day of Atonement—you must sound the horn in your entire land. 25:10 So you must consecrate the fiftieth year, and you must proclaim a release in the land for all its inhabitants. That year will be your jubilee; each one of you must return to his property and each one of you must return to his clan. 25:11 That fiftieth year will be your jubilee; you must not sow the land, harvest its aftergrowth, or pick the grapes of its unpruned vines. 25:12 Because that year is a jubilee, it will be holy to you—you may eat its produce from the field."

The reason Daniel and the Israelites were in Babylonian captivity was because Israel did not keep these commandments. As we read above, they were to follow God's divine plan for their lives and their land by letting their land rest on certain years:

  1. Every 7th year was a sabbatical year - the land was to be given rest for divine replenishment.
  2. Every 50th year was a jubilee year - the land was to again be given rest, and there was a year of celebration, forgiveness of debts and release of all servants.

What did God tell the Hebrew people would happen if they did not keep these special years? We find it again in Leviticus, one chapter later:

26:18 "‘If, in spite of all these things, you do not obey me, I will discipline you seven times more on account of your sins."

26:21 "‘If you walk in hostility against me and are not willing to obey me, I will increase your affliction seven times according to your sins."

26:24 "I myself will also walk in hostility against you and strike you seven times on account of your sins."

26:27 "‘If in spite of this you do not obey me but walk in hostility against me, 26:28 I will walk in hostile rage against you and I myself will also discipline you seven times on account of your sins."

So, we see that the Lord would punish them seven times what they would disobey; in the space of 10 verses, he states it clearly 4 times. Is this why God chose to punish them 70 years in the Babylonian captivity? If we study the Bible, we will find that is because the Israelites did not keep the sabbatical year, the 7th year of rest, over a 490 year period. In a period of 490 years, there would be 70 sabbatical years (490/7 = 70). There’s a very interesting passage that closes II Chronicles chapter 36 that helps explain this:

36:14 "All the leaders of the priests and people became more unfaithful and committed the same horrible sins practiced by the nations. They defiled the Lord’s temple which he had consecrated in Jerusalem.

36:15 The Lord God of their ancestors continually warned them through his messengers, for he felt compassion for his people and his dwelling place.

36:16 But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his warnings, and ridiculed his prophets. Finally the Lord got angry at his people and there was no one who could prevent his judgment.

36:17 He brought against them the king of the Babylonians, who slaughtered their young men in their temple. He did not spare young men or women, or even the old and aging. God handed everyone over to him.

36:18 He carried away to Babylon all the items in God’s temple, whether large or small, as well as what was in the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and in the treasuries of the king and his officials.

36:19 They burned down the Lord’s temple and tore down the wall of Jerusalem. They burned all its fortified buildings and destroyed all its valuable items.

36:20 He deported to Babylon all who escaped the sword. They served him and his sons until the Persian kingdom rose to power. 36:21 This took place to fulfill the Lord’s message delivered through Jeremiah. The land experienced its Sabbatical years; it remained desolate for seventy years, as prophesied."

Hearken back to what Jeremiah prophesied:

"25:11 This whole area will become a desolate wasteland. These nations will be subject to the king of Babylon for seventy years."

But, not only did Israel not keep the sabbatical year, but they were also sinning for the entire 490 years and not keeping God’s commandment. There were 490 years represented by these 70 sabbatical years in which the Jews were sinning through idolatry and bloodshed. The Lord said the following in the prophecy of 70 weeks:

"Seventy weeks have been determined

concerning your people and your holy city

to finish the transgression,

to bring sin to completion,

to atone for iniquity,"

The Lord said he was going to finish the transgression and atone for the iniquity for the full 490 years they sinned. Thus seventy weeks, a week being a period of seven years, or 490 were needed to atone for their iniquity.

Jacob's Trouble

Interestingly, we have had six major persecutions of the Jews in history, and one more predicted in the future, for a total of seven persecutions:

  1. Assyrian exile
  2. Babylonian exile
  3. Roman exile
  4. The Crusades
  5. The Inquisition
  6. The Holocaust
  7. The Great Tribulation (not yet fulfilled, but this will be Daniel’s final week.)

Remember, the Lord said he would punish them seven times for their disobedience. It appears as if these seven horrible persecutions could be those seven times. Daniel 9:27 talks about the antichrist confirming a covenant for one week. Why do we think that week is the seven year tribulation?

As mentioned earlier, Jacob had to work 14 years to get his wife Rachel. This time was known as "Jacob's trouble", and a plain reading of the text would lead one to draw the conclusion that when Jeremiah referred to this time, it was a period of 14 years, broken up into seven years of work for Leah and seven years of work for Rachel. The passage in Jeremiah 30:7 states:

"Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble, but he shall be saved out of it."

Jacob’s trouble, then, is 14 years. Many Jewish rabbi’s will say that Jacob’s trouble took place from 1938 to 1945 during the Holocaust, but that was only ONE 7 year period. The 7 year tribulation will be the 2nd 7 years of Jacob’s trouble.

Hitler and the antichrist have several similarities:

  1. both have insignificant beginnings (Daniel 8:9 says the AC will be a "little horn")
  2. both are political and military leaders
  3. both have a partner that is a propanda minister (Goebbels and the False Prophet)
  4. both were allied with Rome (Mussolini and the False Prophet)
  5. both persecute Jews for a 7 year period
  6. both have a 3.5 year period of killing Jews (the final solution an the great tribulation)
  7. both have a mark or emblem (swastika and mark of the beast)
  8. both conquer southern and eastern territories
  9. both Hitler and AC will be destroyed by fire

With so many similarities, not only is Hitler a possible preview of the antichrist, but he fulfilled the first seven years of Jacob's trouble. Together, these two 7 year periods could fulfill Jacob’s trouble, a 14 year period.

Part II: Verse by Verse Analysis

Daniel 9:24

"9:24 "Seventy weeks have been determined

concerning your people and your holy city

to finish the transgression,

to bring sin to completion,

to atone for iniquity,

to bring in everlasting righteousness,

to seal up the prophetic vision,

and to anoint a most holy place."

Above, we see a six-fold purpose for the seventy weeks, or 490 years, determined, and on whom they are determined. The seventy weeks were for Daniel's "people" and Daniel's holy city. Daniel was a Jew, and therefore the seventy weeks, ALL seventy weeks, are for the Jews and for the holy city, which is without a doubt Jerusalem.

In order to understand the precision accuracy of this prophecy, we must briefly touch on prophetic time. Which calendar is God using for prophetic time? There are four calendars:

  1. Jubilee calendar: a religious Hebrew calendar
  2. Jewish calendar: a Jewish civil calendar
  3. Julian calendar: Gentile calendar
  4. Gregorian calendar: a modern calendar

The Jubilee calendar is very important to Hebrews, and it is mentioned in the book of Jubilees and Enoch in the Dead Sea scrolls. It divides 360 days into 12 months, 30 days per month, and allows four 4 days at the equinoxes in summer, spring, fall and winter. It was used by the Essenes. The Jewish calendar has the months fixed according to the moon phases, and years are fixed according to the sun phases. We are currently around year 5759 using this calendar, which dates back to Adam. On the Gregorian calendar, we are around year 6000. This 200 some year time gap difference is due to what the Jews call a major error in the Persian calendar. This calendar is used to assign Jewish feast days.

The Julian calendar was established by the Roman Julius Caesar in 45BC, based on the sun. The year was set at 365 days, and the leap year every 4th year at 366 days. The problem with this calendar was it was 11 minutes too long and this caused problems with holidays. The Gregorian calendar we currently use corrects the Julian calendar in 1582AD and is based on the birth of Christ.

What calendar is God using? It appears, when he deals with Jews, he will use the ancient Jewish calendar based on the prophecy of Daniel and Revelation. If we make the tribulation the Gregorian calendar of 365.25 days in a year, it turns out that there are 35-37 more days on our calendar than on the calendar of God. Interestingly, Jesus said in Matt 24:21 that the days will be shortened (amputated or cut off). This could be what Jesus was referring to when he said this. Some interpret that will mean the sun will not be out as long, but that is not correct. What it means is God will revert back to his old calendar of the Jews, and God will thus cut the days short so that not all people on the earth are destroyed.

Daniel 9:25

"9:25 So know and understand:

from the going forth of the message to return and build

Jerusalem until the anointed one, the prince,

there are seven weeks and sixty-two weeks.

It will again be built, with plaza and moat,

but in distressful times."

Now we get into the mathematical precision of the prophecy. The division of the 490 years as follows:

1. seven weeks (7x7) or 49 years

2. 62 weeks (62x7) or 434 years

3. one week (1x7) or 7 years

First 69 Weeks: The Starting Point

Let's look at the first two divisions of this period in this verse. First, we must understand the starting point, or trigger, for the beginning of the seventy weeks. The angel declares that there would be a command to both return to and rebuild Jerusalem, and the day that this decree was issued would start the first seven week period. When did this decree occur?

There were four commands made by Persian kings to either restore the temple or Jerusalem, recorded in the Bible:

  1. Cyrus in Ezra 2:1-5 - to rebuild the temple only
  2. Darius in Ezra 6:1-12 - to rebuild the temple only
  3. Artaxerxes in Ezra 7:11-26 - to rebuild the temple only
  4. Artaxerxes in Nehemiah 2:5-8 in 445BC to rebuild Jerusalem. On the Jewish calendar, this was Nisan 1, and on the Julian calendar, this was March 14, 445BC

Daniel’s first week began when Artaxerxes gave the decree in 445BC. Why are the first 69 weeks broken into two parts? It is very possible that it took 49 years to rebuild the city of Jerusalem after the Babylonians destroyed it, then the next 434 years, or 62 weeks, were a period in which Jerusalem would be alive and well, yet still experience "distressful times throughout".

First 69 Weeks: The Ending Point

Now, onto the ending point of the first 69 weeks. The prophecy says it would end on the day the anointed "Messiah the Prince" had come, which would be a total of 173,880 days broken down as follows:

7 weeks per year X 69 weeks X 360 days per year = total 173,880 days

A much quoted author on this subject, Sir Robert Anderson, wrote a classic book called "The Coming Prince". Through the research in this book, which meticulously detailed the number of days with leap years included, the end of the 69th week or 483rd year happened on April 6th, 32A.D., and was the EXACT DAY of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem and was declared the Messiah!

Let's look at this amazing prophetic fulfillment of the first 69 weeks of the prophecy. Luke 19:29-40:

19:29 Now when he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples,

19:30 telling them, "Go to the village ahead of you. When you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.

19:31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’"

19:32 So those who were sent ahead found it exactly as he had told them.

19:33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying that colt?"

19:34 They replied, "The Lord needs it."

19:35 Then they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt, and had Jesus get on it.

19:36 As he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.

19:37 As he approached the road leading down from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen:

19:38 "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"

19:39 But some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples."

19:40 He answered, "I tell you, if they keep silent, the very stones will cry out!"

Not only does this passage fulfill the prophecy of the 69th week, but it fulfills the following passage from Zechariah 9:9:

"Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion!

Shout, daughter of Jerusalem!

Look! Your king is coming to you:

he is legitimate and victorious,

humble and riding on a donkey

on a young donkey, the foal of a female donkey."

This was also prophesied in Psalm 118:26:

"May the one who comes in the name of the Lord be blessed!

We will pronounce blessings on you in the Lord’s temple. "

A few points about the prophecy and its fulfillment:

  1. Why was it that Jesus, so many times throughout the gospel of John, said "My hour is not yet come" in reference to going to Jerusalem? Jesus would not go up to Jerusalem because he knew the fulfillment of this prophecy would be on a specific day.
  2. Note that when the Pharisees said his disciples should be quite, Jesus said that if they were, the very rocks would cry out. Why would this be necessary? Again, because the fulfillment of the 69th week of the seventy week prophecy required Jesus to be announced as the anointed one, or the Messiah.

With the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the 69th week of 7 years, or the 483rd year, was brought to a close. There is still one more week left, and it was separated from the first 69 weeks for a specific purpose. Before we understand that, let's look at verse 26, which includes activities that happen between the 69th and 70th week.

Daniel 9:26

"9:26 Now after the sixty-two weeks,

the anointed one will be cut off and have nothing.

As for the city and the sanctuary,

the people of the coming prince will destroy them.

But his end will come speedily like a flood,

until the end of the war that has been decreed;

there will be desolations."

The phrase "after the sixty-two weeks" gets some people confused, but it shouldn't. If you read verse 25, the first 69 weeks are separated into 7 weeks, then 62 weeks. Verse 26 just continues the progression by saying that after these separate 62 weeks are ended, the following will happen. The activities in this verse all occur before the final week of seven years, but AFTER the 69th week was completed.

Four days after the last day of the 69th week was fulfilled at the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, a Passover, Jesus was nailed to the cross for our sins. This event, the most important event in human history, fulfilled this part of the prophecy. Although not part of the seventy weeks, the crucifixion of the anointed prince Messiah was sufficiently important that the angel told Daniel about it. The verse states he would be "cut off and have nothing", or another translations say "but not for himself". The general interpretation is that he would be killed, but his death would mean more for others than for himself.

The prophecy indicates that, after Jerusalem and the temple would be built up, and after the Messiah would be cut off, both the city and the temple would be destroyed. This would be done by "the people of the coming prince". This part of the prophecy was fulfilled approximately 38 years after the crucifixion, in 70A.D., and was carried out by the Roman emperor Titus and his people.

If the "people of the coming prince" were to destroy the city and temple, and those people were from the Roman empire, it follows that the coming prince himself will emerge from some territory of the Roman empire. Now, just because Titus came from Rome, that doesn't mean this coming prince will emerge from Rome. It is a fact that the Roman empire extended well into the middle east. In fact, below is a map of the Roman empire:

At this point, we could get into a detailed study of this coming prince, also known as the antichrist or "the beast", but that would be too lengthy of a study. Please click the link below for a detailed study on the origin of this coming prince based on this, and other parts of scripture:

http://www.geocities.com/rebornempowered/Babylon1.htm

This coming prince, according to other scriptures, will enjoy a 3.5 year reign, relatively short for an empire. This Daniel prophecy states his end will come "like a flood", or quickly, swiftly and forcefully, which would fit a 3.5 year reign that ends in the battle of Armageddon.

In essence, the final phrase of verse 26 states "there will be desolations until the end of the war that is decreed". Desolations where? No doubt in the city of Jerusalem, if not the whole of Israel. By looking at history since 70A.D. until 1948 which Israel was reestablished as a nation, there have been several desolate periods for the city of Jerusalem. Instead of going into deep detail on this subject, I highly recommend you read the following exposition:

http://www.meforum.org/meq/0104jer.shtml

Although a lengthy read, it is exhaustive on the subject, and helpful to understanding the meaning of this section of the prophecy.

What is "the war that is decreed"? It is hard to tell, but since this verse and the next are dealing with the "coming prince", it is my belief that this is the battle of Armageddon when Christ returns to the earth to battle the beast antichrist and his armies in the area of Megiddo, Israel.

The Times of the Gentiles: The Gap

After the 69th week of the prophecy, the activities in verse 26 take place, but as explained above, these activities are not part of the 70 weeks. Instead, there is a gap of time until the commencement of the 70th week. That week will commence, we will later learn, at the confirmation of a one-week covenant by the coming prince. The time in-between this 69th and 70th has many names, but the most common is "the times of the Gentiles". It is a time period where the clock paused for the nation of Israel at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and a Gentile clock started ticking. We read about this time of the Gentiles in several places, but the foremost verses of scripture are as follows:

Romans 11:25:

"For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: A partial hardening has happened to Israel until the full number of the Gentiles has come in."

Luke 21:24:

"They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led away as captives among all nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled."

The seventy weeks of Daniel ARE NOT CONTINUOUS. There is a gap of time, the times of the Gentiles, in which God has turned away from the nation of Israel to focus his attention on the new nation he has chosen, which is the church. This is a very deep study, and instead of getting into it here, I have a link below to a detailed study on this subject. Read "Part I" of the teaching below:

http://www.geocities.com/rebornempowered/rapturerevelation.htm

Is there proof in Scripture of this gap of time between the 69th and 70th week? Indeed, there are no less than 24 direct or indirect references to this gap of time. Let's look at some of the most quoted examples:

  1. Romans 11:25
  2. "For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: A partial hardening has happened to Israel until the full number of the Gentiles has come in."

The "partial hardening" means that not all of Israel has denied Jesus is the Messiah. But the hardening will last until God's patience and grace for the Gentiles runs out. At that time, Daniel's seventy weeks clock will start again.

  3. Revelation 12:5-6
  4. "So the woman gave birth to a son, a male child, who is going to rule over all the nations with an iron rod. Her child was suddenly caught up to God and to his throne,

and she fled into the wilderness where a place had been prepared for her by God, so she could be taken care of for 1,260 days."

Revelation chapter 12 begins with a symbolic history of Israel from the birth and death of Christ until the remnant of Israel is chased into the wilderness or mountains for 3.5 years. The "male child" that was born and suddenly caught up to God was Jesus and his ascension. Notice, however, that after he ascended to the throne in verse 5, we jump all the way into the final 3.5 years of the tribulation in the description. This is a time gap jump of at least 1900-2000 years.

  5. Luke 4:17-20
  6. "and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

'The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, 4:19 to proclaim the year of the Lords favor.'

Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.

Then he began to tell them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read.'"

    and Isaiah 61:1-2

"The spirit of the sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has chosen me. He has commissioned me to encourage the poor, to help the brokenhearted, to decree the release of captives, and the freeing of prisoners,

to announce the year when the Lord will show his favor, the day when our God will seek vengeance,"

You may be asking "Where is the gap here?" The quotation from Luke is Jesus beginning his ministry in the synagogue. Notice after he reads the passage from Isaiah, he says that today the scripture is fulfilled. But notice the phrase Jesus left out of his quotation: "the day when our God will seek vengeance". Why did he leave this out? Because the first time he came, he was not coming to bring vengeance. The first time he came, he was a lamb, but at his second coming, he will be the mighty lion of Judah. The day of vengeance of God will occur yet in the future, Daniel's 70th week.

  7. Hosea 3:4-5

"For the Israelites must live many days without a king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred fertility pillar, without ephod or idols.

Afterward, the Israelites will turn and seek the Lord their God and their Davidic king. Then they will submit to the Lord in fear and receive his blessings in the end of the days."

This passage tells us that the Israelites will be without a kingdom or sacrifice until the "end of the days", when they would turn back to God. This is similar to Romans 11:25, and is another example of the gap of time between the 69th and 70th week of Daniel, before God steps back in the picture in the end of days.

A way to think of the gap of time is a chess match. Israel's time clock was running until the time of the crucifixion, then God made his move, stopped their clock and started the clock for the Gentiles. When the times of the Gentiles has come to fullness, the Gentile clock will stop, and the Jews 70th week will begin with the signing of a covenant with the coming prince.

Daniel 9:27

"9:27 He will confirm a covenant with many

for one week. But in the middle of that week

he will bring sacrifice and offering to a halt

on the wing of a desolating abomination,

until the decreed end is poured out on the one who makes desolate."

First, we must establish who the "He" of verse 27 is. To do that, look back at verse 26:

"9:26 …..As for the city and the sanctuary,

the people of the coming prince will destroy them.

But his end will come speedily like a flood,

until the end of the war that has been decreed;

there will be desolations."

The last person referred to in verse 26 is "the coming prince". It says "his end will come speedily like a flood…". It follows, therefore, that the "He" of verse 27 is this coming prince, NOT Jesus. Some have made the argument that verse 27 is referring to Jesus and his work on the cross being the "covenant with many", and him being crucified in the middle of the week bringing the sacrifice to an end.

This argument, based on many scriptures, does NOT hold water. Those who hold this view argue that the 70 weeks of Daniel ARE continuous, and there is no reason to believe that there is a "time gap" between the 69th and 70th week. As shown above, there is most definitely was a gap. But if there is any verse that disproves their theory, it is Matthew 24:15-16:

"24:15 "So when you see ‘the abomination of desolation’—spoken about by Daniel the prophetstanding in the holy place (let the reader understand), 24:16 then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. "

Jesus is referring directly to Daniel 9:27, the abomination of desolation. He says that when this is seen in "the holy place", which is the temple, let them in Judea flee to the mountains. This event has NOT yet occurred. If you want to argue that this happened in 70A.D. when the Romans invaded Jerusalem, then there is no way that the 70 weeks are continuous, because it occurs over 30 years after Jesus was crucified. Bottom line, there is NO WAY you can make Jesus the "He" of verse 27 without violating several other scriptures in prophecy, Matthew 24:15 being the most important.

Having established who the "He" of verse 27 is, we can move on to what he does. The final week of Daniel's 70 weeks will begin at the signing of a peace covenant by the coming prince with the nation of Israel. The coming prince, who is the antichrist, will likely represent many nations Muslim nations. Here's what Isaiah had to say about this covenant in chapter 28:15-18:

"For you say, "We have made a treaty with death, with Sheol we have made an agreement. When the overwhelming judgment sweeps by it will not reach us. For we have made a lie our refuge, we have hidden ourselves in a deceitful word."

Therefore, this is what the sovereign master, the Lord, says: "Look, I am laying a stone in Zion, an approved stone, set in place as a precious cornerstone for the foundation. The one who maintains his faith will not panic.

I will make justice the measuring line, fairness the plumb line; hail will sweep away the unreliable refuge, the floodwaters will overwhelm the hiding place.

Your treaty with death will be dissolved; your agreement with Sheol will not last. When the overwhelming judgment sweeps by, you will be overrun by it."

This passage says that the covenant they sign with the antichrist will be a covenant with death. Indeed, Daniel 9:27 goes on to say that in the middle of the 70th week he will enter the temple and cause the sacrifice on the altar to cease, then set up an abomination that makes Jerusalem desolate. This means that the antichrist will do the following:

  1. invade Jerusalem in the middle of the 70th week (after 42 months)
  2. break the peace treaty he made with Israel
  3. kill the two witnesses (according to Revelation chapter 12)
  4. set up an abomination in the newly rebuilt Jewish temple, most likely the image of the beast spoken of in Revelation 13
  5. cause the sacrifice that is on the altar to cease

The "decreed end" that is poured out on the desolator, which is the antichrist, is for him to thrown into the lake of fire, which can be read in the book of Revelation. The battle of Armageddon will be the final battle in which Christ returns to earth at the "second coming" and does battle with the armies of Satan. The antichrist and his army will be defeated, and according to Revelation, the blood will be up to the bridles of the horses.

PART III - Prophetic Scenarios

With each of the four verses analyzed, we will now examine scenarios based on some other verses in prophetic scripture which are interrelated with the prophecy of the 70 weeks. The analysis WILL involve some conjecture, and even though the conjectures are based on solid scripture, the prophetic scene may not unfold as this document anticipates.

Purpose of the Final 7 Weeks

We've already discussed the purpose of the 70 weeks overall, but what is the actual purpose of the final seven weeks, commonly known as the seven year tribulation? Why didn’t God just fulfil the last 7 years in succession with the previous 483 year period?

One could argue a two-fold purpose:

Purpose One - Punishment of Gentile nations:

Let's look at an interesting passage from the Old Testament that speaks of the "day of the Lord", which is this final seven year period (not to be confused with the final 3.5 period called by Jesus Christ the day of "great tribulation in Matthew's gospel). The "day of the Lord" appears many times in the scriptures, and is always described as God's day of wrath.

Wail, for the day of the Lord is near; it comes with all the destructive power of the sovereign judge.

For this reason all hands go numb, every human heart loses its courage.

They panic— cramps and pain seize hold of them like those of a woman who is straining to give birth. They look at one another in astonishment, their faces are flushed red.

Look, the day of the Lord is coming; it is a day of cruelty and savage, raging anger, destroying the earth and annihilating its sinners.

Indeed the stars in the sky and their constellations no longer shine; the sun is darkened as soon as it rises, and the moon does not shine.

I will punish the world for its evil, and wicked people for their sin. I will put an end to the pride of the insolent, I will bring down the arrogance of tyrants.

Several judgments from this passage:

  1. destroying the earth
  2. annihilating the sinners on earth
  3. punishment of the world for its evil
  4. punishment of the wicked people for their sin
  5. to put an end to the pride of the insolent
  6. to bring down the arrogance of tyrants (are you listening, Mr. Arafat?)

"The Lord’s sword is dripping with blood, it is covered with suet; it drips with the blood of young rams and goats and is covered with the suet of rams’ kidneys. For the Lord is holding a sacrifice in Bozrah, a bloody slaughter in the land of Edom.

Wild oxen will be slaughtered along with them, as well as strong bulls. Their land is drenched with blood, their soil is covered with suet.

For it is the day of the Lord's vengeance, a time when he recompense for the controversy over Zion."

In this passage of scripture, the Lord is revealing his anger against Edom…interesting that this is the area much of controversy in the middle east is currently experiencing. The land area east of Jerusalem, known as the "West Bank", is the major source of controversy currenty (2001-2002), has been for many years, and will continue to be until the Lord returns for HIS VENGEANCE on the the Gentile nations. The land was given to Palestinians by British mandate early in the 20th century, and the country that is currently called Jordan is where the ancient area of Edom existed.

A couple more interesting points from this passage:

  1. The Lord is holding a sacrifice in "Bozrah", a bloody slaughter in "Edom". Wow, what powerful words, which have NOT YET been fulfilled. They will be fulfilled during Daniel's final week, when Jesus Christ steps in the mix. The following web site has an interesting description of Bozrah:
  2. http://www.yeshuatyisrael.com/bozrah.htm

  3. the phrase "the day of the Lord" is found again here, and the purpose is a repayment for the controversy over Zion, which is modern day Jerusalem. Check the headlines in 2002, and you will understand that we are living in amazing times, for the controversy over Jerusalem is happening in our lifetime.
  4. Below is a map of Israel. Notice that Jerusalem just west of Jordan. The "West Bank" is shaded in dark tan, and includes half of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, Ramallah, and Jenin, all terrorist hubs. Palestinians used to occupy this area until the Jews declared Israel a nation in 1948 and began to take over key cities. There has been controversy ever since.

"Let the nations be roused and let them go up to the valley of Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit in judgment on all the surrounding nations.

Rush forth with the sickle, for the harvest is ripe! Come, stomp the grapes, for the winepress is full! The vats overflow. Indeed, their evil is great!

Crowds, great crowds are in the valley of decision, for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision!

The sun and moon are darkened; the stars withhold their brightness.

The Lord roars from Zion; from Jerusalem he sounds forth his voice. The heavens and the earth shake. But the Lord is a refuge for his people; he is a stronghold for the citizens of Israel."

Again, we see the "day of the Lord" mentioned, this time describing multitudes of people in the "valley of decision" or the valley of Jehoshophat, which is located near the Mount of Olives where Jesus which touch down at his second coming to earth. A couple more points from this passage:

  1. the judgment of "all surrounding nations" of Israel will occur in this place. There is no doubt this is referring to the battle of Armageddon in Revelation chapter 19.
  2. Compare verse 15 with Isaiah 13:10 - both indicate cosmic disturbances and stars no longer shining.

"And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem."

The word nations is "goyim", and means Gentiles. This is the punishment of the Gentiles, and the "day of the Lord" is synonymous with the tribulation. The word "Gentile" is "goyim" in Hebrew, and is interpreted in the following scriptures as "nations":

  1. Psalm 9:17
  2. Isaiah 34:2
  3. Isaiah 60:12
  4. Zephaniah 3:8
  5. Zechariah 12:9

God states in Zechariah 12:9 he is "seeking" to destroy the Gentile nations that come against Jerusalem - the nations surrounding Israel are currently ALL enemies of Israel, and ALL are Muslim nations.

Purpose Two - Bring the Jews to their salvation in Jesus as their Messiah

The second purpose, bringing the salvation to the Jews, was predicted in Romans 11:25-27:

"25. For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

26. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

27. For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins."

This final week will also be fulfilled through Israel and the Jews, when they will be saved. Right now, Israel is an unbelieving country...there are many athiests and agnostics. The tribulation is also called "the day of the Lord" many times in the OT:

Isaiah 13:6

"Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty. "

Isaiah 13:9

"Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it."

Isaiah 34:8

"For it is the day of the LORD's vengeance, and the year of recompenses for the controversy of Zion."

Jeremiah 46:10

"For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates."

Joel 2:1-2

"Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;

A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations."

IMPORTANT: "the day of the Lord" includes the "great tribulation" of Matthew 24, and is the final 42 weeks of the 7 year tribulation, but they are not synonomous. The great tribulation is the final 3.5 years, representing God's wrath:

Mat 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

Battle in the Valley of the Passengers

A major war, which is yet to have taken place, is described in Ezekiel 38 and 39. This war will be led by a Russian confederacy and include many Islamic nations who are Israel’s enemies. Ezekiel says the major battles will take place in the "valley of the passengers" on the east of the sea, as well as the Bashon area (which is now the Golan Heights):

Eze 39:11

"And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamon-gog."

The valley of the passengers in the Hebrew means "abarim". The Abarim Mountains are currently on the border of Jordan, east of the Dead Sea! Right across the border is Jericho, which is the headquarters of the PLO! Ezekiel says in the valley of these mountains is where many people will die. In this battle, it will take 7 months to bury the dead and 7 years to destroy the weapons. It also says that wood and trees will not be cut down to burn the weapons, so these aren’t the kind of weapons that can be easily destroyed by a fire:

Eze 39:9-10

"And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years:

So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord GOD. "

Eze 39:12, 14

"And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.

And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search."

After this war, which will involve Lybia, Ethopia, Iran, Turkey, Germany, then the world will force them to go to the table and make peace. This could be the peace treaty confirmed by the coming antichrist. There will be a time of national tranquility and stability and security from dangerous enemies.

The Covenant With Many

This coming antichrist will come as a peacemaker, a military leader with a bow and no arrows. In Daniel 9:27, it says he will make a covenant with many. The word "many" in Hebrew is "rabim". The word rabim is plural for rabbi. So it could be translated: "he will make a covenant with the rabbis." Why the rabbis? Because a new temple will be built in Jerusalem, and the rabbis will be involved in the temple process and its dedication.

In Daniel 11:28, it says the antichrist will be against the holy covenant:

" Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land."

This covenant is the Abrahamic covenant God made with the Jews. The antichrist will be a Muslim and come out of the ancient Babylon territory (see this discussion at http://www.geocities.com/rebornempowered/TheFinalGeneration/Babylon1). The covenant will be a covenant that will divide the land for gain, according to Daniel 11:39.

" Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain."

This will be the covenant that begins the tribulation 7 years.

The Palestinian Problem

Dividing the land for gain brings us to an interesting comparison with current events. Consider the following passage from Isaiah 14:29-32:

"Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent's root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.

Howl, O gate; cry, O city; thou, whole Palestina, art dissolved: for there shall come from the north a smoke, and none shall be alone in his appointed times.

What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That the Lord hath founded Zion, and the poor of his people shall trust in it."

The whole problem in the middle east is the Palestinian problem. Palestinians under British mandate were given many parts of the land of Israel, but when the Jews declared Israel to be a nation in 1948, that land was taken away from them and they were made refugees. The whole problem is related to this, and the Palestians want this land back, and they want Jerusalem since to Islam it is a holy city.

Palestina is Palestine, and one of the PLO flags has a fiery flying serpent on one of its flags! See graphic below. Verse 29 is a prophecy against the PLO.

Another interesting current event that is most exquisitely prophesied in Ezekiel are the Palestinian desires to claim the ancient Hebrew land and landmarks as their own. I'm sure you've heard Yasser Arafat cry for out for Jerusalem, vowing to never give up the fight for the land. In the same way, the Muslims claim the holy temple mount Moriah to be their own, and have pledged to NEVER give up the temple mount to the Jews again. Compare these current events to these verses in Ezekiel:

Ezekiel 36:1-3

"Also, thou son of man, prophesy unto the mountains of Israel, and say, Ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the LORD:

Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because the enemy hath said against you, Aha, even the ancient high places are ours in possession:"

Therefore prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because they have made you desolate, and swallowed you up on every side, that ye might be a possession unto the residue of the heathen, and ye are taken up in the lips of talkers, and are an infamy of the people:"

How interesting that the Muslim claim to the "ancient high places", just as Ezekiel prophesied, is taking place DURING OUR LIFETIME! And, yes, the Arabs and Palestinians have "swallowed up" Israel on every side: in Gaza to the west, in the west bank to the east, Lebanon and Syria to the north, and Egypt to the south. Fascinating prophecy!

An even bigger problem is the city of Jerusalem, the main city for three monotheistic religions: Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Palestinians want part of this city to be their capital, but the Israelites are not going to let this happen. Indeed, Zechariah prophesied this city would be the center of controversy in the end of time:

Zechariah 12:2-3

"Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.

And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it."

Jerusalem - Center of Controversy

Several important points about Jerusalem during the tribulation period:

  1. Jerusalem will become a cup of trembling and poison to the whole earth and will trodden down of the Gentiles for 42 months, according to Revelation 11:2:
  2. "But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months."

  3. Jerusalem will then become the headquarters for the antichrist and false prophet, and all the spiritual activity of Revelation chapter 13 happens on the temple mount platform, according to Daniel 11:45:
  4. "And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him."

Between the seas, which is the Mediterranean and the Dead Seas lies Jerusalem, which is where he will plant his palace after the headquarters in Babylon are destroyed. The glorious holy mountain is without a doubt Mount Moriah, the temple mount.

VERY INTERESTING: The Muslim prophets must be consecrated and sealed in the city of JERUSALEM! This could be why the antichrist invades Jerusalem and the holy temple to sit in the temple as if he is the LAST IMAM, the Mahdi that will conquer the world and convert it to Islam, the last prophet of Islam that the Muslims are looking for in their tradition and their Qu’ranic teaching!!!!!!

  5. The bodies of the two witnesses will lay in the court of the temple for 3.5 days and will be killed in the same area that the Lord was crucified, according to Revelation 11:8-10

"And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and a half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.

And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth."

INCREDIBLE MUSLIM PARALLEL: The Muslims have a tradition to keep a body out for 3.5 days to spit on it and ridicule it!! This is why we are told in Revelation 11 that their bodies are left to rot in the streets for 3.5 days. Remember, the Jewish remnant has fled to the mountains for protection, because the abomination of desolation was set up in the temple by the antichrist. They won't be around to pick up the bodies of the two witnesses to bury them. The Muslims will have their way with the bodies for their ritualistic 3.5 days.

Middle East Leverage: Oil

  1. We all know the United States has a huge dependence on middle eastern oil. Without it, our economy screeches to a halt in a very short period. Does it surprise you to know that the antichrist will have control over all the oil that exits the middle east during the tribulation? With this power, the United States will be at his mercy. Consider this passage from Daniel 11:24:
  2. "He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers' fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strongholds, even for a time."

The "fattest places" is the Hebrew word "mashman", which can be translated "the fertile, oily places". The word "province" is the Hebrew word "mediynah" which means Medina or the desert places.

  3. There is also evidence that their regime will control the Suez Canal area, and the Red Sea, which is the exit point through to the Mediterranean Sea for sending oil to the western world. Consider this passage from Daniel 11:42-43:

" He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.

But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps."

He will have power over this area - Egypt, Lybia, Ethiopia. This area borders the Red Sea, where the Suez Canal is located. If the antichrist controls oil, it would cause the American stock market to crash and our ecomony to go into a severe slide. Without stock market wealth, which is all on paper anyway, it is easy to see how things could unravel very quickly for the United States. That is why in one hour, 10 Mediterrean kings will give their kingdoms over to him...because of oil. They want to be on this man's good side from the beginning.

The Great Tribulation

There are seven major events we know will happen during the final 42 months, the day of the Lord, or the great tribulation:

  1. the coming antichrist will proclaim himself to be God - 2Th 2:4
  2. "Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God."

  3. there will be an image created that will both speak and live - Rev 13:15
  4. "And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed."

  5. people will be commanded to take the mark of the beast - Rev 13:16
  6. "And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:"

  7. there will be a breaking of the peace agreement - Dan 9:27
  8. "And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate."

  9. there will be an abomination of desolation causing the oblation to cease in the temple - Mat 24:15
  10. "When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)"

  11. there will be the murder of the two witnesses - Rev 11:7
  12. "And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them."

  13. there will be the destruction of Mystery, Babylon (Rome) - Rev 18:10

"Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come."

All these events, and many others, will take place in the final 3.5 years. Please see other documents on my website which discuss these topics.
