Project ZX750F1
previous day's entry March 11, 2003 next day's entry
So I wake up the next day early in the morning to get a good start to see whats really wrong with the bike. Since I had killed the battery the night before in an attempt to start it, I need to either hook it up to a charger or jump start it from another battery. I pull the battery from my Datsun 510 and continue to try n start the bike.

I almost get fed up when the damn thing wouldnt start, finally after about 30mins it starts again. The bike wont hold an idle and it only seems to sort of idle when I have the choke enabled. Probably clogged carburetors.

Since I killed the battery, I need to run it for at least 30 mins to charge the battery back up or it will damage the battery. I get adventurous and go get my helmet (I have a motorcycle helmet that I bought off of eBay to use in my car for auto racing. Most drag strips mandate helmets) I get on the bike and ride it down the street. I get to the corner and slowly turn.. Im not used to having to lean to turn, it was scary but I did it. Crap I think the tranny is bad since I couldn't get it to change gears. Since I can't get it to shift into the next gear I decide to bring it back since I cant cruise down on a main street only in first gear. I pull in to the driveway, whew... no accidents, I didnt fall, its all gravy...

Next day
I wash bike, it really needed it. I wish I had pix of how dirty it was but I had to use, simple green, Ajax, engine brite, carburetor cleaner, a wire brush and multiple green pads just to get it clean. Even then, it was still dirty.

I don't like the seat, its made of this black leather. I'll probably redo it myself, I'll use the same black leather, only I will make it one piece instead of the 3 pieces its made up of now.

It needs gas, so I ride it down to the nearest gas station which is about 2 blocks from my house. Its hard to ride since I have to keep on eye on the rpms to make sure the bike doesnt die at a stop light. Its hard to fine neutral, so I leave it in gear and just use the clutch. If it stall Im in big trouble cause, I need to hold the brakes, hold the clutch, hold the choke start it and give it gas to keep it running once its started. Most people would have given up on this bike, but not me. I like a good challenge.

As I pull next to the gas pump everyone at the gas station looks over as they hear the bike, its loud. Louder than I thought. I stick my helmet on the mirror and I attempt to open the gas tank. 3.5 mins later it opens and I filler up, almost 4 gallons. The gas indicator still registers empty, probably needs a new sensor, this brown crud in the tank probably messed it up. Ride it home, trouble free.
