Course Reserves

Copyright Guidelines

A book or journal owned by Rolfing may be placed on reserve each semester. Class notes may also be put on reserve each semester since they are not protected by copyright.

Materials for which the copyright holder provides documented permission may be placed on reserve for the period designated by the copyright holder.

Materials that are under copyright must be reviewed carefully under the Four Factors of Fair Use. In general, libraries have interpreted continual use of the same material as not protected by Fair Use.

Four Factors of Fair Use

Purpose: Trinity is a non-profit organization that encourages research and scholarship for students.

Nature: Typically, non-fiction published works that meet the professor's educational goals.

Amount: Small portion of the entire work which supports Trinity's educational purpose.

Effect: One e-copy can be made and access is limited to Trinity students.

E-reserves

E-reserves may either be linked from one of our licensed full-text databases or they may need to be scanned (i.e. a book chapter or journal article).

Reserves: Purpose and Procedure

Materials that are frequently used can be placed on reserve to grant students access to the information needed to support their coursework. Reserve items are shelved behind the Circulation counter. Reserve items cannot be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

Reserve items are listed in TrinCat. There is also a binder at the Circulation counter that is organized by professor's last name and then by course title. Circulation assistants will check out reserves to patrons.

Patrons must present their Trinity ID to check out reserves. Only two reserves may be checked out simultaneously.

Loan period

Course reserve materials have a two-hour in-library use only loan period. Many reserve items may be checked out overnight if the patron requests them within two hours before closing. Select reserves are one day reserves, which may be taken out of the library.

Returning Reserves

Reserves should be returned to the Circulation counter.

Reserve Renewals

Renewals can be placed once if no one else has placed a hold on that item.

Reserve Holds

To request a hold on a reserve item, place a "Reserve Hold" in TrinCat. This allows the patron to request a reserve for a specified date and time.

Reserve Fines

Fines are $0.01 per minute, with a maximum of $10.00 per book.
