| Rebecca Cuevas De Caissies creative career has taken her from Miami to Richibucto | ||||||||
| When you talk about poets, people invariably get the image of the tortured artist, striving to perfect their art. That's why local poet Rebecca Cuevas De Caissie comes as such a surprise, because she seems exactly the opposite of this image, but is still able to produce stunning poetry.
"As long as its fun, I'm good," the 35 year-old says when discussing future plans. Rebecca, who resides in Richibucto, will be soon publishing her first book of poetry through Publish America, entitled Lamentation of the Caves. The award-winning poet says that the book is a compilation of poems that she has written over the years. "I've just compiled some of my poems that people are fond of, and some of the poems that I won awards for, and tried to put them together with a similar theme," she explains. Among the awards Rebecca has won are the Editor's Choice at poetry.com and the Most Promising New Poet from Famous Poet's Society. However, Rebecca finds that she doesn't fit in with "modern" poets. "I don't get a lot of modern poetry, because it's like modern jazz or something -- a lot of it is very angry," she says. "My poety is for everyday people going through life ... it's something they can enjoy." Rebecca is originally from Miami, Fla., and is of hispanic-American descent. Before coming to New Brunswick, she worked a varied career, including time spent as a sidewalk poet in Kansas City. "I wrote poems on the sidewalk, and people who are going out for walks stop and look at them... and you sorta just hide in the bushes and watch," she says with a laugh. She moved to New Brunswick to be with her husband in Richibucto, and has since been concentrating on her publishing career. She says she chose Publish America because of the artistic freedom allowed by the company. # The official release date for the book is Dec. 12. Rebecca will be in Moncton today (Oct. 18) at the Moncton Public Library for a brown bag lunch meeting. The Richibucto Public Library will be holding a release party for Rebecca during Canadian Libraries Week on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. For more information on the book launch in Richibucto, call the library at 523-7851. |
