On a trek through Rohan, he chose the strongest mares from the roaming herds of Elf-bred horses and bred them, producing the Mearas so respected and cared for millennia later. Note: Eorl's horse is named Father of the Mearas in the history of Rohan. This stallion was actually the first of Dugil's colts to be born and he took control of the herds when he came of age, though he was colt-like in appearance. This was how Eorl and his men found the horses some time later. As wild as his sire, the white stallion allowed none to tame him. When Eorl's father Leod attempted this, the stallion threw him off so that he struck his head on a rock and was killed. Eorl vowed revenge, hunted the horse, and tamed him. Thus the white stallion became known as Felarof--he and his children would bear none but Eorl and his descendants until the time of Shadowfax.
