Escape From Monkey Island
Escape From Monkey Island
By Alan

Im not too familiar with the whole Monkey Island series, so if I sound like I dont know what Im talking about, just bear with me.  This is the fourth installment, I believe, of the series and you once again assume the role of Guybrush Threepwood, mighty pirate (or so he thinks) The game takes place immediately after Curse of Monkey Island, when Guybrush and his wife Elaine, return to Melee Island.  However things on Melee Island are wrong when they return. Elaine has been declared dead, and in her absence, Charles L. Charles has taken the island's spot as Governor. Something is terribly wrong in the Caribbean.

The Pros

The Comedy

Even though this game is mostly puzzles and strategies, the dialogue in this game is game is very funny.  The interaction between characters is an absolute riot, mixed in with a lot sarcasm and crude jokes.  LucasArts did a great job writing this game.  You will find yourself bursting with laughter at many points in the game.

The Cons

The Difficulty

Now, Im a fan of puzzle/strategy games, but I have to say that this is by far the hardest game to get through.  From what I have played, without having any outside help, many of the puzzles cannot be solved by merely searching, as it is in other games like Myst.  The puzzles in this game have to be solved through trial and error, which means you have to try using ALL your items at ALL locations, or on ALL people you see.  I couldnt stand this aspect of the game.

In The End

EFMI is an ok game.  Fans of the series will like it but others will not.  I tried playing it as much as I could without using outside help, but to avail, I couldnt do it.  Finally, I got some info off the net and got through the game, just get through it and be done with the game.  Sure, the games funny as hell, but it aint worth buying in my opinion.  Escape From Monkey Island gets a 5.5.
