世纪攻略造型花絮

Office politics, greed and power struggles - these are the main themes for the new serial Shi Ji Gong Lue (loosely translated as the Conquer of the Century) that MediaCorp Studios is filming in August. This mega production has a strong cast comprising Zoe Tay, Tay Ping Hui, Edmund Chen, Chen Liping, Nick Shen, veterans Li Wenhai, Zheng Geping and Chen Shucheng and Wang Yuqing, who has not been seen on TV for ages. The serial is about several vice-presidents fighting for status and power in a bank. It is the first time MediaCorp Studios has done a serial on the theme of corporate finance, the consultant for companies to go listed. We interviewed several artistes during their image styling session about the upcoming new serial.

<Eastciti.com, August 7> There was quite a crowd at the make-up room by the time the artistes had arrived. The local media were out in full force for this gathering of the glamorous. After a long wait for the artistes to change clothes, put on make-up, take photographs, be interviewed by reporters, change some more clothes and repeat the rituals all over again, (who said being a star is easy?) we finally secured a moment with the stars to ask them about their roles in the new serial.

Zoe Tay As Ye Kaishuang
Zoe plays one of many vice-presidents in the corporate finance department, someone who believes in experience and capability. "I play a compassionate person; she does not accept bribes and does not wish to engage herself in office politics. She is hardworking and helps small companies get listed. She is steadfast in love as well. I think the selling point of this serial is that it talks about the dark side of human nature and it is the first time MediaCorp films a serial on Corporate Finance, it will disclose something about commerce and trade. This serial is different from other serials because love and kinship had been downplayed." When asked what she hopes to gain from this serial, the candid Zoe said, "How to buy shares."

How does she feel about working with Edmund Chen and Wang Yuqing again after so many years? "I only found out that Yuqing was acting today. It feels like an old friends' gathering. The last time I worked with him was way back when we filmed Qing Xin Huan Wo Xin. For Edmund, it was in Ma Jie Qing Yuan. Actually it is quite fun. Many artistes in this serial are actually Teochew, like these 2, Chen Shucheng, Nick Shen and Tay Ping Hui, just to name a few." Will she be worried that viewers will be reminded about My Home Affairs because she is acting alongside Tay Ping Hui again? "No, these are different roles, moreover our images and styling are very different. It should not be a problem. This time, Pinghui and I are initially at loggerheads, it is only later during the serial that we developed into a couple."

Zoe On New Movie
After this serial, Zoe will start filming The Tree, an upcoming movie by Raintree Productions. How does she feel about role as a mother? "Basically I have not tried this kind of role before; it will be a challenge, I'm full of anticipation. I have not seen the child playing my kid in the movie. I believe they should be still looking for a suitable one." When asked about her love interest in The Tree, who is played by Wu Zhengyu (Francis Ng), Zoe said, "He is a good actor, I'm looking forward to working with him."

Tay Pinghui As Zhuo Lingfeng
Pinghui plays a man in his 40s, which he feels is "a challenge. I have been going to Shenton Way to observe the senior executives' airs and mannerisms. I think they have a diff aura about them once they reach higher management".

What is the difference between his character in My Home Affairs and in Shi Ji Gong Lue? "It is very different. In My Home Affairs, I'm an indecisive person in love, I cannot make up my mind and stick to my decision, and I do not want to hurt other people. In this new serial, my role does not take into account personal relationships and feelings. He is pretty business-like, you know, do things by the book? He is not as emotional as Hong Guoren in My Home Affairs I find it easier to play such roles because I'm not playing myself."

It is also easier working with Zoe the second time round. "We had a good time the last time we worked together. She took very good care of me. I learnt a lot from her. This time, I'm sure I'll learn more from her." Is chemistry better then? "Yes" came the definite answer.

How does it feel to play lovers once again?
Zoe: Same.
Ping Hui: The script is different, story development is different, the characters are different, our relationship is different… the only similarity is she's (Zoe) this successful, career woman. The chemistry is different but it's still positive.

Tell us about your roles.
Zoe: Both of us started off as nemeses. She's very successful in her career yet she's kind-hearted. She is disagreeable with Ping Hui's character when for example, he wants to retrench the older staff to cut costs. But later on, she starts to see his good points.
Ping Hui: He's a consultant expert in bank mergers. A "doctor" who corrects flaws in banks. He's an American-born Chinese so I've to inject some Americanism into the character, like giving him cuff links which is a typical American corporate look. He's very intelligent, capable, well-to-do, knows what he wants but lacks in the emotional department, uptight, melancholic and not very sociable. One word - cold.

Anything particularly difficult about your roles?
Zoe: The lines are difficult to read! Those banking terms and conditions…I had a hard time memorising them!
Ping Hui: I know those terms and conditions in English but in Mandarin…man! The part on rattling a whole chunk of those jargons, it's most challenging…for instance…I can't even remember any now!

Would you imagine yourself doing this for life?
Zoe: I don't mind but I'm not educated enough! I've always wanted to be a newscaster though…
Ping Hui: Absolutely! I can imagine that, it's very challenging.

Ping Hui, how do you feel about putting back on some clothes now after flashing out in As You Like It?
Ping Hui: No big deal - with or without clothes.

Zoe, how do you like the way they style you in this show?
Zoe: I must say I like corporate wear. I call it "uniform". It's easy to remember and you look smart in them.
