BRENDA MURPHY
PLAYED BY: LISA MERCHANT
CLERICAL WORKER
A small-town girl who moved to the big city of Burlington years ago, Brenda loves her job as a clerical worker at an insurance company. She's "forty-something", and has worked in the same department for 15 years. Her wonderful husband, Doug, died in a bicycle accident in August 2003. Now, she's carrying on, loving and guiding her three beautiful children, Daniel, Caitlin and Luke. There are new challenges every day with them. Brenda has a good heart, but forthrightly voicing her outdated attitudes sometimes gets her in trouble. She loves to hear gossip, but, not for malicious reasons. She will lend a piece of good advice or be helpful and let someone in on something they really should know. She goes to church, loves crafts, the occasional sip of beer, Bailey's, or trips to the Casino.

CHARLES LUCAS WEST-MATHESON
PLAYED BY: ANDREW MARTIN
COMMERCIAL ADVERTISER
Lucas works as a big-time producer for a small-time advertising agency, and always has a feature film script on the back burner. Lucas is a reformed 'bad boy' from an oil-rich family in Alberta. At least he claims to be reformed. Emotional and financial feuds in the family left him bitter, and estranged to his father. That doesn't help him when he's trying to work out how to father a nine-year-old son he never knew he had until last summer, and now Lucas has to fight Charlie's parents for visiting privileges. He has studied every religion out there and their answer to man's selfishness -- and he uses that knowledge to act in purely selfish ways. He has an addictive side he tries to channel into other pursuits, but still, it gets the better of him at times. Lucas' good looks and confidence make him irresistible to women, and everyone wonders "who's next?" However, he recently softened and admitted his love for Nicole. When she rejected him and ran off with Max to Europe, was his heart broken or merely dented?

RANDY KO
ELECTRICAL ENGINEER
An unassuming electrical engineer, his cover is systems designer of imaging software. No one on the train knows he designs circuits for cruise missiles, as Randy tends to keep quiet about the military aspects of his work. Randy's engagement to a strong-willed Korean woman, Agnes, blew up when she discovered he had a stag party with a stripper and told the guys on the train he would like to have sex with someone he knows on the train. The object of his affection, Liz, hasn't been emotionally available to make his dreams come true yet. As smart as he is sweet, Randy has a heart of gold and would do anything for a good friend, and is, for the most part, very, very patient.
USED CAR SALESMAN
Seymour "Love Shack" Shackleton is quick to tell you his nick name isn't because he's a pervert; it's just because of his last name. He presents himself as unable to harm a fly and willing to help a country full of people if he could. A perpetual peddler of the silver lining behind every cloud, he has a good sense of humour and often lends compassionate advice to anyone who will ask - and they do. Seymour is likely to have experienced anything you are going through right now. Divorce, death, transition, medical procedures. Some people can listen to him forever, others want to turn him off like a tap. He's a successful used car salesman with air fresheners as business cards. Shack has a lot of "friends", one of whom hooked up with Pete for some business advice and gave Pete an Alfa Romeo as a thank you gift. Also the same friend who landed Pete in the hospital for not paying up on a stock market loss. Seymour seems capable of being both sweet and sinister.

PLAYED BY: INGRID HART
AESTHETICIAN
Shannon celebrated her latest career advancement with a spring fling in New York City. Her dreams of marrying her long distance guy, Darnell, and moving permanently to the Big Apple, were dashed. Now, she has a vibrant affair with her mother's live-in, homecare nurse, Gavin, all the while keeping a close eye on fellow train passenger, Lucas West. She has big time resentment for her overbearing sister, Simone, who had been taking care of their ailing mom for years, and suddenly "moved" their mother to Shannon's house. An esthetician at a chic salon in Yorkville, Shannon is sometimes more therapist than beautician. You can always count on Shannon for telling it like it is with the brutal truth -- unless she's lying.
ZACH EISLER
PLAYED BY: JOE DINICOL
JUNIOR GRAPHICS DESIGNER
Somewhere between nerdy and cool is Zach. He seems at most times to be trying to figure out where he went wrong in life and re-organizing, starting today. He has a job as a junior graphic designer at a local entertainment newspaper, "Tdot", but his ambitions lie with his comic book creation Big Man. The comic's huge, muscular, oversexed hero is everything Zach is not. He likes girls a lot but tends to put his foot in his mouth or withdraw around them; however he can give great advice on romance to his good friend Randy. Zach only started a first relationship this summer with "an older woman", Victoria, but unfortunately, her borderline personality disorder got in the way. Still, Zach went above and beyond duty as Mr. Nice Guy. He's the coolest.

PETER SUBRAMANI
STOCKBROKER
PLAYED BY: RAOUL BHANEJA
An ambitious, smooth-talking stockbroker, Pete "Superman" Subramani was a rising star in his company until he took big losses over the last few rocky years. Now he is focused on making money and reclaiming his place at the top -- and he's on the way. He is especially partial to life settlements, where terminally ill people with life insurance policies are conveniently ready to turn over their investment. Despite being sarcastic, insensitive, and arrogant, he is very popular with some women, and he's generous enough to lend his expertise, black book or classifieds to anyone. Although he's not one to dwell on psychoanalysis, he's starting to wonder about his inability to keep a relationship going, more than ever after nearly finding true love with Trina, who apparently had already found Lucas (intimately). He is embarrassed by his working-class immigrant father, Ramkisham (also known as "Bob") who is a building superintendent. Pete is driven by the fear that he will be a failure and vows not to turn out like him.

JOHNNY McLAUGHLIN
PLAYED BY: PAUL BRAUNSTEIN
INDUSTRIAL CLEANER
![]() |
Johnny had been a construction foreman who works hard and plays hard. He lost his position in the summer of 2003 and is trying to make a go of his own business, "Shed for Brains", selling custom-made sheds. He's dedicated to building a success; however he has lofty ideas and few business skills. Johnny is a loyal family man at heart. He's been married for 17 years to Charity and has three kids: Crystal, Tammy and Mariah, none of whom are interested in his hockey card collection. As much as Johnny loves his daughters, his one regret in life would be that he doesn't have the boy to whom he can teach hip check and power stopping skills. Johnny is basically a cheerful, upbeat person, although he also has a temper when his buttons are pushed -- particularly if he's being made fun of. Johnny's long-term ambition is to buy a cottage in Parry Sound with a big boat and boathouse.

The baby was miscarried, though, and now Liz has to decide her next step. Will that step be with or without her long-time admirer and friend, Randy Ko? Liz lives alone in a beautiful, renovated farmhouse in Ancaster, right near the suburbs. She bought the farmhouse with the plan to settle down and have a baby there. |

DANA DAVIN
PLAYED BY: JOANNE BOLAND
MUSIC STORE EMPLOYEE
Dana's ambitions are to be a song writer, change the world, and move downtown -- at some point. She lives in her parents' suburban basement and is going back to university this year to please them, in a trade-off for room and board. She loves her poetry class, but navigating the desires of the professor may be the hardest work in the course. She is envious of her brother, Nigel, and his "luck" in being the baby of the family. He even got a backpacking tour of Australia as a high school graduation gift. Dana has been working in a handmade jewelry store on Queen West. Her job is okay, but it's getting a bit much with school and her music "career" as well. She has a girlfriend named Sue, who proposed last summer, but they're still just going out. Dana is a caf stool activist who is moving toward getting more practically involved, via university life: non-violence, women's rights, anti-globalization, and environmentalism.
