Quick Info
The Shoki (Demon) was designed as a small and highly loaded fighter specifically for the interception role. The type was the only interceptor to serve with the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force, and after the start of strategic attacks on the Japanese home islands by American bombers the Shoki proved its worth as the fastest climbing Japanese fighter.

Ki-44-Ib   Uparmed to four 12.7mm guns, oil cooler was removed from inside the engine cowling and placed within a small scoop under the nose, just behind engine cowling
Ki-44-Ic   Differed from -Ib solely by removing the lower hinged portions of the landing-gear doors from the gear legs to the fuselage
Ki-44-IIa   New engine, Armed two 12.7mm machine guns and two 7.7mm machine guns
Ki-44-IIb   Armed with four 12.7mm guns
Ki-44-IIc   Armed with four 20mm cannon in place of four machine guns (Some -IIcs were experimentally fitted with two fuselage-mounted 12.7mm machine guns and two wing-mounted 40mm cannon)
Ki-44-III   New engine featuring individual exhaust stacks, increased wing area and enlarged tail surfaces
Ki-44-IIIa   Armed with four 20mm cannon 
Ki-44-IIIb   Armed with two fuselage-mounted 20mm cannon and two 37mm wing guns
Total Production: 1225 built
