| Quick Info
The Grief (Griffin) was a potentially excellent but ultimately disastrous warplane on which Germany expended enormous and therefore largely wasted resources. The type was schemed as a bomber able to deliver a large bomb load over a considerable range at high speed and altitude, and in an effort to extract maximum performance from the four-engined powerplant by the minimisation of drag, it was decided that the pair of engines on each wing should be coupled to drive a single propeller. This coupled powerplant was beset with technical problems that were never wholly cured and resulted in numerous inflight fires. The first of eight He177 prototypes flew in December 1939, and slow development meant that it was the summer of 1942 before 30 He177A-1 and 170 He177A-3 early production aircraft entered service.
