Quick Info
Although it was already obsolescent when Japan entered World War II in 1941, the G3M belied this technical limitation by scoring a number of stunning successes in the opening phase of Japan's offensive onslaught. The lack of an adequate replacement meant that the 'Nell' was forced to soldier on into total obsolescence and suffered devastatingly heavy losses. First flown in July 1935, the G3M was designed to provide the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Force with the means to project it's air power deep into the pacific. The variant that entered service in 1937 was the G3M1, but these 34 aircraft were soon supplanted by an eventual 993 examples of the G3M2(uprated engines and greater fuel capacity) and G3M3(further uprated engines and increased fuel capacity). Some aircraft were also converted as L3Y armed trransport aircraft.
