Quick Info
Given the fact that the Luftwaffe was designed primarily as a tactical air force for the support of the Army, it is an unusual reflection on the service's overall thinnking that during World War II it used only two main tyoes of short-range reconnaissance aircraft, one of them the Focke-Wulf Fw189 Eule (Owl) twin-boom monoplane with the crew in an extensively glazed central nacelle. This first flew in 1938 and ebtered service in 1940. It's success on the Eastern front led to it's adaptation to a wide variety of roles. In addition to the close-support role the Fw189 was adapted for use a a night-fighter. At least 30 A-1s weremodified to servein this role.
