Designed to a 1939 requirement for a B5N successor, the B6N Tenzan (heavenly mountain) may be regraded as a extension of the design philosophy that inspired the B5N with considerably more power for significantly improved performance. The first of two prototypes flew in the spring of 1941, but the time needed to eradicate the problems that were encountered meant that the first of 133 B6N1 production aircraft entered service only late in 1943 with the 1870hp (1394kW) Nakajima NK7A Mamoru 11 radial engine. Further development of this engine was then cancelled, forcing Nakajima to develop the B6N2 with a diferent powerplant. Production of the B6N2 totalled 1133 aircraft in two subvariants, but little effective use could be made of these aircraft for lack of capable aircrew. The B6N3 was a purely land-based development that did not enter production. Variants
