| Quick Info
The B5N was the torpedo and level bomber counterpart of the Aichi D3A dive-bomber, and as such was a major weapon in the first part of the Japanese campaign in the Pacific theatre from December 1941. The type resulted from a 1934 requirement, and the first of two prototypes flew in January 1937. Successful development paved the way for the B5N1 initial production model with the powerplant of one 840hp (626kw) Nakajima Hikari 3 radial engine. Production of the B5N1 bomber was complemented by that of its B5N1-K advanced trainer derivative, and by 1941 the type had been replaced in first-line service by the improved B5N2 with a more potent engine. B5N production totalled 1147, and the B5N2 remained in first-line service up to mid-1944, thereafter being retasked to less demanding roles such as maritime reconnaissance. Variants
