Quick Info
It is impossible to overstate the importance of A5M carrierborne fighter in the development of Japanese industry and Japanese military capabilities in the mid-1930s. With this type Japan moved from dependence on western imports and thinking to a completely indigineous product that was Japan's first carierborne monoplane fighter and also in every way comparable in terms of performance and capabilities with the best of it's western equivalents. The first of six prototypes made the type's maiden flight in February 1935, and the A5M1 enterted service in spring 1937. Production of the series, which departed first-line service in 1943, totalled 980 aircraft in the A5M1 to A5M4 series, the last with open rather than enclosed cockpits. There are also 103 examples of the A5M4-K two-seater trainer development. In total it is estimated that nearly 1000 A5Ms were built, the aircraft proving very popular with naval pilots.
