Robert Inhuman interviews Belladonna, October 2006

Robert Inhuman: What was your initial motivation in becoming a pornographic artist and how has it changed over time? Also, is there an online biography of your career that you would most recommend for anyone interested in learning your history?

Belladonna: There was no real motivation, other than a girlfriend of mine was going to LA to do nude modeling and she told me to come with her. So it started out really with me wanting to make some fast money, and I ended up making a career out of it. I don’t know of any online timeline of my career, but that would have been a cool thing to do... damn!

How are variables such as location, clothing, cast, etc. chosen for your projects? Who is involved in these curatorial decisions and coordinating?

We own a few different properties that we shoot at a lot, and I do all of my own wardrobe shopping and also do all the casting myself. Sometimes, my partner, Aiden helps, but he's mostly busy shooting and editing the movies.

What is your favorite aspect of your career and are there specific projects that have been most rewarding or groundbreaking?

Favorite aspect would be that I get to pick and choose everything to do with my productions, who I work with, what we look like, what we wear, how we fuck, everything! It’s the greatest feeling to be in control. The most rewarding would be all of the fans constant appreciation of the blood and sweat I put into my projects. I really am doing this all for them!

How important is a balance between reality and illusion in your work? As an artist and sexual icon how do factors of illusion come into consideration for projects ie. photo technique, body language and alteration, etc?

With my movies, the sex is all real.. the only disguise would be that the girls don't typically dress that way when they're about to have sex. When I cast girls, I try to cast the girls who are REALLY into sex and love to do it, not the girls who are obviously in this business just for the money. I love sex and I want to have sex with a girl who loves it as well!

There is a consistent experimental element to much of your work, how have you come to decide on certain guidelines distinguishing Belladonna Entertainment such as seeking only females interested in anal sex? How important is experimentation and defying pornographic cliché in your projects?

My whole business is really experimental actually... we don't stick to proven marketing guidelines, we do what we think is hot or we'd like to see, and the fans seemed to love it.  I'm just glad they're into it, because I'd be a very poor woman if nobody was into the sex that I think is hot!  And I am shooting guys now actually for my new company, Deadly Nightshade Productions.

What is your reaction or statement to people who have objected to your work at any point? Is justification to these people important to you or not?

It’s actually not important to me at all. There will always be people out there who do not approve of what we do or say, but who the hell are they to judge me? Only I can judge me. And luckily we still have that freedom... for now.

Anything else you would like readers to know about yourself or your work?

I just want everyone to know I'm taking over this industry one day at a time!
