Robert Inhuman interview with Bobby (Columbus OH) for The Blastbeat 04/20/04

http://www.athiumsatanus.net/blastbeat/interviews/inhuman.html

The Blastbeat: Hello, tell us a little bit about yourself and your thing More Punk Less Rock.

Robert Inhuman: Don't know what you specifically want to know - I'm 22 now, bouncing back and forth between Cinci and the C-bus Ohio, I am part of two bands currently: Realicide and No Candy, and I assemble music solo on the side. MPLR Recordings is like this growing collective of kids that have a somewhat common ground in their artistic ethics; trying to bring shit back to an earlier punk ethic of creativity, risk-taking, aesthetic imperialism in things like electronic music now, and what I'd consider genuine non-conformity. I'm planning on evolving the groups in MPLR into a legit label and distro little by little. I'll be out of school in a month, not planning on looking back, so this ought to start accelerating I think/hope.

B: Sounds like a big ass load to be working on. I heard about this thesis you did. Tell us a bit about that.

Robert: Well first off here are a few photos of the Pre-Suicide Inertia event courtesy of Aaron Geiser (AKA Ctrl+Alt+Del who I'll be touring with this summer btw) http://demiurgic.net/pre-suicide-inertia.html and here is the essay that I threw together for it: http://www.geocities.com/realicide/presuicideinertiaessay The event was a weeklong improvised effort involving probably about 30-40 people fucking up the walls (anybody was allowed to come throw shit on there) and there were 2-5 bands/performances every night for those 7 days. I tried to spend as much time as possible in the space - most days I got there by 9:30am and I'd leave usually around 1am that night. I fell asleep a couple times I think but I stayed awake as much as possible and had a hardware noise setup going, along with mean-ass gabber pumping out, almost the entire week all day every damn day. At the end of the week I painted the whole room white again and repaired as much of the damage as I could. A lot of people had some fun at that.

B: Wow, I really missed out on that. I wish Athium Satanus had some material together for that. Maybe next time you organize something like this we'll get in on it.

Robert: That's cool - It was definitely a lot of chaos and everybody except the dean of fine arts seemed to enjoy the whole thing.

B: Haha, well what do you expect from authorty figures anyways?

Robert: A hassle usually.

B: Yeah, I'm suprised he didn't try to shut you guys down, or did he?

Robert: I was bullied a bit by the security dept. at first. I had to meet with a few authorities 2 times before the event started. But after a day or two everyone found out that this time I wasn't planning on hurting anybody; no blood; not like that shit. So even after I was told "no more spray paint" because of health codes obviously - they turned a blind eye when we'd still be piecing and tagging here and there. I think the guards were just happy to see something more exciting overall - not just a huge white wall with like some skittles tacked on it in an array so whatever like you are supposed to feel intellectually intimidated by that shit??!! My show was a lot more action/fun that most of the shit that room gets year after year haha. Whatever.....

B: Yeah, fuck anyone who tries to stop an artist from producing his art.

Robert: They didn't try to stop me though that's the interesting part

B: It seems like it with the security dept. oh well, I'm lacking sleep. It's good to hear people are out doing good shit like this. Backtracking to the beginning with No Candy and Realicide what can we expect from both of these bands during the summer?

Robert: Realicide is touring June and July the midwest and westcoast US. I will die in the middle of nowhere most likely - well we'll see... But a lot of the cide kids are not coming and will be doing various things in Cincinnati. Swill and Julian are in a new band called Raw Fist, Aaron is working on his solo hardware noise set and recordings, Mavis is going to be recording a lot I think, Beta is working on his album, etc. etc. A lot of CDRs are being finished at this point from everybody, including the first non-live cide tracks. As for No Candy we'll have a demo finished and will be scheduling shows for any time after I'm [hopefully] back in Ohio. It will be sick... STRAIGHT OUTTA SLIMEHOLE MECCA!

B: Ladies and Gentleman ROBERT INHUMAN and his traveling FREAK SHOW!!!! Coming to a trashcan near you. I'm sure you'll survive and make it back to wonderful Ohio and tell us many tales of your misadventures and abductions.

Robert: It's not much of a freak show - I'm not even bringing anybody from BUKKAKE with me...unfortunately.

B: Hahaha, now that would be interesting.

Robert: It would be great considering who was in BUKKAKE!

B: Tell us WHO exactly was in BUKKAKE!

Robert: Swill, Mighty Cum (Julian), and Fuck Fiend (Beta). Their sick-as-fkk CD is finished and available now btw.

B: Thanks for the info on the CD.

Robert: You wouldn't say that if you heard it.

B: Now I can't wait to hear this shit. I hear Mavis is your brother. Is he younger or older and who influences the other more?

Robert: He is my brother and a couple years younger than me. I influence him a little too much sometimes but he is still developing his own attitudes too fortunately.

B: Yeah, my little brother has been buggin the shit out of me to start some techno/noise/grind thing with him but I just don't think he's ready yet. Maybe I should let him borrow your Endless Robbery Inside Candy Coated Infection CD, which is pretty kick ass btw.

Robert: That disc is pretty underdeveloped but thanks. My newer work has more character I think.

B: You're welcome. What's the followup to Endless Robbery called, and what can we expect from it?

Robert: I submitted 10 minutes, 5 songs, of material to a split a couple months ago. It will be with Iron Bitchface, Gigantic Brain, and a few others of that whole genre. I don't want to be highly associated with that style but I do enjoy certain examples of the electronic grindcore stuff. The music I made for it is essentially more gabber and more grind than my previous attempt to foster "gabbergrind" on the 3" disc last summer. But there are other styles mixed in as well - trying not to force myself to like always scream etc. I am just trying to do what can best represent my life right now in terms of recorded music. Grindcore and gabber are the primary influences right now though yeah. The split should be available very soon.

B: Very very cool. Is that being released through MPLR AND Noisick?

Robert: No, it is not. I do not release music through Noisick; I only trade discs once in a while with him. The release with be through what I think is a Canadian label called Contempt for Electronics. I'm not positive about that info but it's on an email I have somewhere from Electrocution Nerdz, who is organizing the split. It will be distro'ed by MPLR for sure though.

B: Ahh, I thought that Chris at Noisick would release it since Iron Bitchface is on it. So what else is going on in the world of Robert Inhuman?

Robert: I am working on my hardware powerelectronics material, recording and mixing Realicide, finishing the production of a few discs by various kids before the tour, still trying to nail down all the show dates too. I spend a lot of my time right now talking to a lot of people and trying to figure out how to get what I want out of performance media and DIY products. I am trying to assemble a lot of new vocal pieces, lyrics I mean, and I'm working on new visual shits as well. Slimer plays a growing role in all of this.

B: Wow, and how are you finding time for all of this?

Robert: I'm under a lot of stress right now. Not going into detail - but I will get a lot of shit done right nice in this bitch '04. It's now or never I guess.

B: Yeah. So I've heard some shit's went down in Cincy where your name got a bit of taint to it. Have you tried to clear that up and do you care to elaborate on any of it?

Robert: What are you specifically talking about?

B: I got some insider info that you were in a band that did some stuff that pissed people off, but you weren't really doing anything to piss anyone off. One of the members aparently kicked the glass out of a door at a local venue.

Robert: That was like 2 years ago and it was a Realicide show but I was not in the band at that point. That show does not represent me because I was not even in Cincinnati at the time. Here is what I've been told: Nick Nerswick flipped out when the battery that powered his bass pick-ups stopped working. Apparently he threw it down onto the stage floor, the Void that is (RIP oh-fucking-well but you can still piece on the rooftop yes), and he's a big guy so this 6 string bass got smashed. He went to leave the building and tried to kick the front door open. The glass door shattered, he went outside and started punching the wall or something, came back in (set was still going on btw) and things just got kind of weird. SO I WAS TOLD - I was not present. That's far from a decent Realicide story. There's some weird shit going on a few of those times. But actually Nick flipped out again last night when we were at SGH - he punched threw a snare drum haha.

B: Hahaha wow, lots of shit happens in Cincy. You ever run into the "Courage Crew"?

Robert: No, I do not.

B: Ever hear of them?

Robert: Yes, I know who that is.

B: Ok. Well it's about time to wrap this bitch up and ship it off to Interweb land, so I'm gonna slam you with some quick questions, sorta like a 20 questions deal, then we can get some damn sleep.

Robert: Great, ok.

B:

1) Scat or Gabber?

2) Mavis Concave or Mavis Beacon Typing Tutor?

3) Cincy or Columbus?

4) Sound Forge or Acid Pro?

5) Instruments or Samples?

6) The Blastbeat?

Robert:

1) Gabber

2) My Brother (Concave), not the tutor one.

3) Cincy, but ever place has it's up's and downs.

4) Don't care

5) I don't want to play instruements, but it's great when people do want to play them. I use samples because I am interested in editing and appropriation as an alternative and contemporary language or vessel of expression whatever...

6) The Blastbeat needs work but it's e-heart is in the right place I suppose. Keep it based on local info would be the advice I have off-hand. Get some solid priorities I guess that's all.

B: Thanks a whole fucking lot for doing this interview for us at the Blastbeat, and I can't wait to hear about the tales of the west. Maybe you should do one of those tour diaries while you're out.

Robert: I will write a lot in a notebook if that's what you mean...

B: Yeah that's what I meant lol.

Robert: No computer in the car bro.

B: Well you gotta do analog work some time, some where...

Robert: My heart is in tapes believe it or not. Ok thanks Bobby - say a wicked "hi" to James for me! That evil evil man.....
