A suggestion being trumpeted by the Libral media elite is that the President should apologize formally to China in order to save face for both countries. Based on my own ideas of foreign policy -based around kicking ass rather than saving face- I would offer a different course of action, which I will most respectfully submit after I get the obligatory girlie picture out of the way:
Mmmmmmm.
Where was I? Oh, yes. Of course. Rather than the current technique of negotiating over a formal apology acceptable to both parties (which can oly favor strengthening China's image in the world and weakening that of the U.S.), I would suggest that the release of the prisoners and the plane demanded. In order to back up this demand, I would threaten a freeze on Chinese assets in the United States and a suspension of trade with China.
Whereas the U.S. economy wouldn't suffer that much, the Chinese economy would plunge into turmoil. Bush would just loose his office if things don't go our way. The Chinese leaders will be killed in a coup if things don't go their way. They're playing for high stakes, so we should, too. I'm not scared of China. We shouldn't act like we are. They've been to beligerent lately. They need us, we don't need them.
