From up north to down south, we made our way to Phuket. It was so nice there. We lived in this little cabana a walk away from the beach. It was one of the best times of my life. The beach was sandy white and the water was crispy clear. When I was sitting on this boat on my way back from Freedom Beach, it's one of the few times in my life where I felt completely content.
Freedom beach was amazing. Amy and I hired a boat to take us there and it was such a beautiful beach. Isolated. We found this natural spa in the middle of this beach and it was heaven. I sat in my chair looking across the nearly empty beach, in complete contentment while listening to Incubus' "I Wish You Were Here." This is true spiritualty.. when your soul feels happy and free.
Here are some of the lyrics:
I dig my toes into the sand
The ocean looks like 1000 diamonds strewn across a blue blanket
I lean against the wind
Pretend that i am weightless
and in this moment, I am happy... happy...
Amy and I totally relaxed in Phuket but also did some excursions. We went to visit the Phi Phi islands. Phi Phi Don was beautiful... pictures can't capture the essence of how beautiful it is. We went over to Phi Phi Lei also where THE BEACH was filmed. There, we snorkeled for a bit which was really fun but not a lot of fishies. We also went to the James Bond - Man with the Golden Gun island. The ride there on the boat was amazing. It reminded me of Guilin with the beautiful hilly landscape... like camel humps in the water.
One of our day excursions was a full day seven course Thai cooking lesson. It was a lot of fun. We went with our teacher to pick out fresh veggies at the market, then headed back to the kitchen and made pad thai, curry, egg rolls, etc. We not only had a great time, we were also well fed.
During the nights, we became regulars at this bar called Kangaroo Bar. It played American popular music and had a fun atmosphere. The manager at the bar adored us and the girls that worked there were super cool. When I was sick one night, the manager made me a special kahlua shot that knocked the cold out of my system. Thais are the nicest people ever.
Towards the end of our trip, we visited the Bridge over the River Kwai (real event where the Japanese forced Thais and others to build this bridge and railroad tracks in order to transport supplies and weapons during the war. It was also made famous by the movie Bridge on the River Kwai starring William Holdren and Alec Guinness).
We did many small excursions throughout the trip from visiting Orchid nurseries (Orchids are Thailand's specialty flower) to monkey farms with monkeys running amuck! Thailand is one of the most amazing countries I've ever visited. It's the combinations of vivid colors of the people, culture and scenic views that made it a one of a kind experience where true contentment can be found.
