One of the main things that people do wrong is get too far away from the subject. A great way to improve your photographs is to just move a few steps closer. Obviously not too close as this will more than likely crop something out of the picture. Especially if you are using lower priced consumer zooms you won't wont to crop you images very much as you will lose a lot of quality.

Tip: If you are using a zoom lens the less you are zoomed the better the quality will usually be because there will be less distortion and a much less chance of camera shake.
