Your current position >> Learn >> What should you look for when buying film?

There are two different types of film available to use, negative film and slide film. Both have there own uses.

Negative film
Negative film is the most popular type of film as you can obtain prints from them that can be easily stored and shared. Also these prints can be obtained at mini-labs in sometimes an hour or less. They are called negatives because the color are an inverse of the original. You can get film in both color and black and white depending on your preference. Black and white film is however a little more expensive but might be worth a try.

Slide film
Slide film on the other hand is usually viewed through a slide projector. Slide film is said to have richer colors and a more tones then the negative film. It is the preferred film for publications like magazines.

What is film speed?
The film speed is basically the films sensitivity to light. The higher the film speed the more sensitive the film is to light and thus you can use faster shutter speeds. Film speeds range from ISO 100 to over 800, but what film should you use? The choice of what film you choose is all up to the conditions that you take your photographs and personal preference. For a beginner though the ISO 400 film will be suitable for most situations

Landscape photography
If you are just taking photographs of landscapes with a tripod the best quality will come from slower speeds of films like ISO 100 film. If however you need to take other photographs without a tripod this is not the best option. Maybe try something like ISO 200 film for mixed photographs

Night time/fast action photography
For photographs with low light you might want to try use a fast film like ISO 800 but even the use of 400 might be adequate for this. You will find that your camera starts selecting smaller apertures (higher f numbers), which will give you more depth or on the other hand faster shutter speeds
