WHEN TO DO: BEGINGIN OF SCHOOL YEAR AND END OF SCHOOL YEAR. TO BE PLACED IN STUDENT’S PORTFOLIO FOR COMPARING AT END OF YEAR.
APPROPRKATE AGE: Kindergarten through sixth grade. Yes sixth grade. I would even do this eye opening project with adults. This project can lead into wonderful discussions of skin color and hair textures.
PURPOSE: STUDENTS LEARN TO APPRECIATE AND IDENTIFY DIFFERNT SKIN COLOR AND HAIR TYPE.
MATERIALS: People of color crayons and paper. Several mirrors. Scisors. Glue. Yarn of various colors for hair. Thread of every color for eyebrows and lashes. Blue, green, brown and purple colored paper for eyes.
SKILL: Compare and contrast.
SUBJECT: Art.
SLO: The student will follow written directions to make a self portrait.
ANTICIPATORY SET: How do you make a self portrait?
ACTIVE TEACHING: First you have to look in the mirror to see what you look like. Next you will have to pick out a piece of paper that is as close to your skin color and eye color and lip color. You will need to cut these papers as close to your face, eye, lip, and nose shape as possible. You will need to gather thread to make eye lashes and eye brows and thread to make your hair.
GUIDED PRACTICE: Call two students up in front of the class. Have them look in the mirror. Have them go through the process of choosing paper and hair.
INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE: Have the students make their self portraits.
ASSESSMENT: The student followed all the directions.

Read book: Colors Around Me. Writing: All About Me. Do the self portait with paint. What colors make up your skin color? Many people have reds, pinks, yellows and even blues in their skin colors. Science/Social studies: What is melanin.
