Message to African American

Parents

I believe that:

1. African-American students are capable of learning and achieving at high levels.

2. Parents of African-American students want opportunities for their children to achieve at high levels, realizing that they are their first teachers and must be advocates for them.

3. African-American students achieve when high expectations exist and effective instructional strategies are utilized as they are nurtured and respected in the educational setting.

4. The educational system must be held accountable for causing and eliminating academic disproportional and ensure high levels of achievement of African American students.

5. Instructional methodologies and materials must be culturally relevant.

Some reasons that African American Children are not successful in school:

Underinvolvment in school activities other than sports.

Under representation in programs for the gifted.

Overrepresentation in special education programs.

Disproportionate discipline referrals, resulting in suspensions.

Overrepresentation in the juvenile justice system.

Staff members who lack the knowledge or show appreciation for values inherent in the African-American culture.

Staff members who communicate low expectations for behavior and achievement of African American children.

Staff members who fear African American children and their parents or guardians and subsequently avoid interacting with them.

Lingering beliefs of inferiority created by bias reports, publications, materials, and media portrayal.
