-This link gives a synopsis of archives in Duke University's Perkins Library pertaining to student radio on campus, from AM carrier current stations in the 1940s, the now-defunct WDBS and the establishment of WXDU. Remembering WDBS-A brand new site looking back on Duke Uiversity's first radio station from its beginnings as a carrier current AM to its days on 107.1 FM. There are lots of great photos and newspaper clippings. WKIX Rewound-The official website for DJ reunions of Raleigh's legendary top 40-era station. Includes audio clips and biographical information on your favorite jocks of yesteryear. That Was Radio-An interesting site pertaining to Charlotte-area radio of yesteryear with old logos, airchecks and much more from such stations as WBT, Big WAYS, WIST and others. You'll also find nostalgia here from Asheville and Myrtle Beach radio. Tragic96.com-Since 1987, the place in Charlotte and Metrolina for the great music of the '50s, '60s and '70s was "Magic 96.1", WWMG. And to many, September 1st, 2004, will be forever known as, "The Day the Music Died". It was on that date that "Magic" became hip-hop WIBT "The Beat", but the memories of what once was live on at this site. 440:Satisfaction-A Hawaii-based site which lists the names of different radio talent and the stations they passed through in their careers. This particular link is to the North Carolina part of the page. NC Radio.net-A radio discussion board, launched in 2003, that discusses radio in the Tar Heel State, with subject areas for both the programming and technical ends of radio, in addition to an "off the air" page for other interests. Raleigh/Greensboro Radio Board-One of many regional radio discussion boards on Radio-Info.com. The Raleigh-Greensboro board covers both markets and is an excellent place for discussion about radio happenings and history by both professionals and enthusiasts. There are other markets, formats and subjects on this site as well. All Access Music Group-Essential daily reading for any broadcast professional or enthusiast. Joel Denver's site for the news of the day in radio and the recording industry. Also includes discussion boards and other information. Broadcasting and Cable-The website of the self-styled "Magazine of the Fifth Estate", which is the premeire trade publication of the broadcasting industry. Many features on this site are subscription-only, but there are a few free features. Inside Radio -Another web source for information on the radio industry. There is a subscription fee to enjoy the full benefits of this site, but there are some free features here as well. Radio and Records Online-An excellent source for information on the latest 12+ Arbitron numbers and who's buying which station. Radio Research Council-If you're looking for an idea on listenership for the area's non-commercial broadcasters, point your browser here. This site allows to you pull reports on markets nationwide. Radio World-A trade publication for radio professionals. Radio World mainly deals with engineering, and makes for interesting reading. Hampton Roads Radio Site-A site dedicated to the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News, Virginia radio market, a larger radio market about 180 miles northeast of Raleigh. Triangle Radio Reading Service-Newspaper and magazines are read for the visually impaired by this service, which is aired on WUNC-FM 91.5's 67 kHz sub-carrier. Raleigh Amateur Radio Society-Official web site for the area's Ham radio operators, who prove essential in times of severe weather or other emergencies when traditional means of communication are not in service. Society of Broadcast Engineers, Chapter 93-The Society of Broadcast Engineers, Chapter 93, serves the Raleigh, Durham and Fayetteville areas. Highway Information, Inc.-A Durham-based firm which specializes in the installation of AM Traveller's Information Stations. North Carolina News Network-Owned by Capitol Broadcasting Company, NCNN provides North Carolina news to 90+ radio stations statewide as well as forecasts from the WRAL-TV Weather Center and sports news. Their news updates generally hit at five till the top of the hour. Radio One/Raleigh-The page with information on area properties of Radio One, the nation's biggest urban broadcasting company. Radio One owns Foxy 107-104, The Light 103.9 and K97.5 locally. Of note to radio history buffs is the fact that the URL www.ccraleigh.com still accesses the Radio One/Raleigh site. Clear Channel owned all the above stations before selling them to Radio One when they bought out Capstar, the owner of four other local stations.
Trans World Radio- An international religious broadcaster based in Cary. Though not heard in the Triangle area, TWR reaches millions worldwide via shortwave. Triangle Radio Partners-Detailed information on the area's Clear Channel Properties. Locally, Clear Channel owns G105, Rooster 106.1, 93.9 Kiss FM, and 100.7 The River. Strong Signals-A site put together by an area HAM radio enthusiast which includes a detailed list of frequencies in the area, even those not used for broadcasting. AM Stereo Broadcasters-Invented in 1982, AM Stereo went the way of Beta and New Coke, but it does have a proponent in this website, which provides a list of AM stereo stations worldwide. More importantly, it's a great resource for information on AM stations still spinning music. Christian Radio.com-A great website featuring information about Christian radio stations from sacred to contemporary to gospel, plus links to programs and more. Tower Site of the Week-Scott Fybush, publisher of Northeast Radio Watch, travels the nation and the globe photographing antenna sites from San Francisco's Sutro Tower to WSM-Nashville's landmark Blaw-Knox diamond tower. Check here for the latest tower sites every Thursday or Friday. LPFM.com-A thorough site with information on the FCC's new Low Power FM service. Radio Locator-A comprehensive list of radio stations and translators in the United States, broken down by state. Formerly the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Radio Stations on the Web site, Radio Locator has a wealth of technical information on individual stations. You can even find FM, FM translator and AM daytime/nighttime coverage maps here free! Surf wisely, though, since you get locked out for the day if you download too much information. A History of American Broadcasting-An exhaustive resource for information on the American Broadcasting industry from KDKA to today. PAMS Classic Jingles-PAMS is the Dallas-based firm which produced many of the "jingles" or musical call letters heard on classic Top 40 stations in the sixties and seventies. They have an archive of old jingles accessible from this site. World Trade Center Antenna Farm-Though highly insignificant when one considers the tragic and senseless loss of almost 3,000 people in the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks, the North Tower of New York City's World Trade Center served as the primary TV/FM antenna farm for the nation's #1 television and radio market. New York broadcasters made use of its status as the tallest building in New York City for maximum line of sight propagation, essential for FM and TV transmission. This site has many pictures of the site, as well as pictures of the tragic day it was destroyed by Muslim terrorists. Interesting Signs of the Triangle-Jimmy Storey's excellent site highlighting the unique signs found around the Research Triangle region. Jesse Helms Center-Based in Wingate, NC, on the campus of Wingate University, the Jesse Helms Center is named for the late senator who served our state for five terms from 1973-2003. Senator Helms worked at WCBT in Roanoke Rapids and then WRAL radio and television in Raleigh from 1960 until his election to the Senate in 1972. The Center was established to promote understanding of the principles of democracy, the free enterprise system, and moral values; virtues that embodied Senator Helms in his three decades of principled and distinguished service to our state.
